How would this speaker sound for guitar?

Re: How would this speaker sound for guitar?

no...22 watts would not be enough power to nearly drive that thing. it would probably end up flabby because of lack of power. You want more volume (or more perceived volume), you need more wattage and more speakers. But you need speakers that fit your wattage a little more. Gotta move more air chief.

Re: How would this speaker sound for guitar?

hmm

22 Watt MIGHT be enough to get good volume with the 15" Speaker ALONE...but it might be a stretch.

I used to power a quad - 15" speaker system with a 80 watt amp and it sounded OK at low volumes, but who buys 15" speakers for bedroom level volumes??? LoL

Re: How would this speaker sound for guitar?

You won't need more wattage, but you'd need a bigger, more massive power supply. That Eminence speaker is very very efficient, but it has a huge magnet, and therefore needs an authorative amp to control it.

That Eminence is a bass amp or PA speaker, and as X said, it would sound like poop with a guitar :D

OK...First you more than likely could drive that speaker with 22 wtts but it is gonna sound pretty lame Im sure.

Second...this speaker being 15 inches has NOTHING do to AT ALL with it's volume!

Third, that speaker is 100db efficient, and while thats a pretty good number it's not insanely high...as an exapmle and for a comparsion, a Celestion Vintage 30 is also 100db efficient.

NOw that thats out of the way...what kind of tone are you looking for from the speaker? Why a 15 if I may ask and what is the amp in question?

Re: How would this speaker sound for guitar?

Ok, the amp is a mesa boogie studio .22+

It has to be a 15' speaker because i bought 2 15' cabs off a mate for cheap, and i'd like to put them to use!!!

Tone i am looking for......well i'm hoping for a bit more 'fullness' out of the sound, as the 1X12 sounds a bit 'small' when playing live. Plus, having a speaker on eiher side of the stage would sound cool i would think.

Thanks if ya can help! Oh, and how did you find out the speaker efficiency???

And it is a seriously loud 22 watts mind you.

I don't know what you guys are talking about

I don't know what you guys are talking about

I got great tone out of a 1.5W (yes, one-and-a-half watts) amp through a 2x12 with 80W Celestions. You'd be surprised just how little power is going through a speaker that's pretty loud.

That said, a speaker with high power handling capability isn't necessarily going to be the loudest thing around. I wouldn't expect a 15" speaker to sound particularly good with a Boogie, either. If the amp really isn't loud enough, you're probably stuck with getting a new amp. Mesa has typically put pretty efficient speakers in their amps so you can't expect to get much more volume through speaker efficiency. Adding an extension cab will improve projection but won't actually deliver much in terms of additional SPLs.

Re: How would this speaker sound for guitar?

ok, i'm still not understanding why a bass or p.a speaker will sound so bad with a guitar amp???

And although it wont make me much louder, would i be right in saying it would help out the spread of my sound at a gig quite a bit if i had a speaker on each side of the stage? I dont like micing my amp, and although it is loud enough for a gig, there is only one sound source (the internal speake), so it has an inconsistent spread of sound (if that makes any sense)

I've already go the cabinet......should i just buy the speaker anyway? i can always use it for a p.a speaker down the track right?
