How would you repair this vintage Les Paul ?

Well, some dowels and wood glue for starters. Might be worth removing the neck with a heat gun to really get at everything. Strip the finish down to the wood (probably the whole thing for a complete refinish). Then slap the person who made it look like that. :)

That would be quite a job, but I could fix that red guitar. I wonder what dolt thought all that BS was really fixing the break?
 
I think a lot of really bad repairs are done by kids.

Also, back in the old days there was no way to learn how to fix stuff except by trial and error.

So there was a lot of error.

Even Dan Erlewine, who I knew back in Ann Arbor in the 60's, botched a few jobs in the beginning.

We all did.
