Hows my playing/tone/recording?

Re: Hows my playing/tone/recording?

Hey pretty good - good clean playing, you keep a steady tempo, very disciplined. I'm assuming the santana thing a was multitrack -- done on a computer (I am assuming the tascam thing is a mixer -> computer only - no storage?)

Re: Hows my playing/tone/recording?

you messed up a couple of times in the first song, very well done nonetheless. like the clean tone.

i love the second song but personally i think you killed it with the lead guitar though. the playing wasn't bad, it was that fuzzulator thing that killed it. i think the volume may have been a little too high for the lead track but it
wasn't a bad jump.

overall, good recording.

Re: Hows my playing/tone/recording?

your tone sounds good to me. i don't care about mistakes unless you're recording something real or playing live. try putting some distortion on though :)

Re: Hows my playing/tone/recording?

The Playing: too rigid - loosen up the screws!

The Tone - better than mine  very clean, not much "tone" going on really.

The Recording: Good - you'll make it a lot better over time and then it will sound REAL good.

Re: Hows my playing/tone/recording?

Not bad at all, nice clean recording, so you know your interface works well!

Two things..

1. Tempo...you are rushing the song to the point of it losing its feeling and trivialising it. This tends to happen when we practice something over and over, as we become confident with it we tend to speed up and rush through it, because we can! But it doesn't serve the song, so it's a good discipline to try to stay true to the original tempo, which is about 8-10 bpm back from where you're playing it. Take your time with it and let it breathe.

2. The third chord in the bridge section is not quite right. You're playing it as a major, but it is in fact a minor, so it's a D with an F on top, not a G.

Otherwise, great work, just have a listen to the original now for that chord in the bridge and the right tempo. The Beatles recording is stunningly beautiful, the acoustic guitar in it is a classic Abbey Road sound, as is Paul's vocal.

Re: Hows my playing/tone/recording?

Thanks guys, the santana thing is actually not my fuzzulator pedal alone, that sounds nice and classic rockish, its an AM radio bitcrusher mixed with a chorus pedal.. It was to show Cream123 what a bitcrusher sounds like and was recorded through my soundcard. The Beatles track is the demo of my new recording system.

As for your question Dave. Basically its what you said, its a mixer, connects to my computer with usb 2.0 i would have like firewire but it was too expensive. This one is in a really tough road worth case and came with a condenser mic and stand.

I'm gonna work on recording distorted tones next, the tubes in my amp were running very cold today, I couldn't push it as hard as i like and the bass was much to prominent even with the Tone Knob up...

Ha! I told my guitar teacher that chord was wrong.. I'll get that next time, as for the speed, this was my first recording and since i didn't make any major mistakes (in the version i learned) i kept it.

Re: Hows my playing/tone/recording?

alright, sorry dude. i thought it was because it said on the thing, my bad. well the beatles recording was pretty good.

No problem, i just wanted to clear up that my 200 dollar pedal doesn't sound that bad.

Cool, you can teach your guitar teacher something about getting the chords right to a classic song! I fully understand about getting a good take and wanting to keep it. You're on your way now, I can tell you'll be good at recording because you care about the end result. Sounds like the Tascam is doing a good job, if it's USB2 then it's as fast as Firewire anyway. I look forward to the next one.

Thanks man, i never knew how fun this room could be. Sound room can suck my condensing mic.

My next recording is here, im worthless at soloing, so i recorded a progression and i need advice, reply solo's would be cool.

I'll work on blackbird more this week.

Re: Hows my playing/tone/recording?

The bitcrusher+chorus in the Santana song sounds terrible to my ear, and your lead playing in that one is kind of shakey. The rhythm track is excellent.

Black Bird is really good. Tone is a bit thin (sounds like all mids), but it works well for the song. Your playing there is nice - I heard a few missteps, but overall it was solid.

Were you playing to a click/metronome for these? Your tempo is dead on.

You're already a very good rhythm player, and you're definitely well on your way to becoming a great guitarist. You need to develop your feel and sense of style, but that will take time and practice.

Good work ... keep at it!
