HOWY CWAP! Why didn't you guys tell me?

So I'm all set to to take my strat into the local tech and get some new pups installed. I also went to SamAsh to pick up a small practice amp as I'm in a hotel for a few weeks cos of work (and can't lug my MESA).

Decided while I was there to play some different guitars too for fun. Grabbed a couple Ibanez's, a couple ESPs, and a Peavey Wolfgang.

NEVER should have tried the Peavey. Ugly guitar. Never even bothered to pick one up to play cos it's so ugly..which was a mistake. Incredible feeling neck, incredible playability, grover tuners, setup/intonation/neck adjustment was 'on", seems well made/tight, a Floyd that WILL stay in tune with serious abuse, incredible acoustic tone, and the pups rawk! ( they are VERY hot, but PAF like...very strange). It was the last one they had and on sale for $599, and was the color I'd be least likely to get in the 4 colors I've seen available for it.

But I bought it anyway :D So much for the Strat (I cannot keep both). No it doesn't have the nice clean tones of a single coil, but it just played so much better for me than anything I've touched in a long time. Like my new MESA it's just one of those pieces of equipment that just makes you play over the top...Everything FEELS right. The neck is pehenomenally fast, and small but not "thin", the floyd is not recessed so there is no going sharp on palm mutes and such, and it just has a "springy/bouncey" quality that suits my playing I guess. Not sure I can explain it better than I felt like it was made for me. The balance, it's "compact" nature. I must have played it for 7 hours yesterday in the hotel when I got back (fingers are very sore today)

Ok so it's not perfect though. It's still ugly :) Especially the sunburst I got. The quilted top looks like it's fake (but still pretty in its own right). It says "Peavey" on it ;) The trem is a double edged sword as now I cannot pull up on it, but it's not a big deal really. The fretboard is getting black from the strings (actually kinda gives it some character..noticed the used american wolfgangs they had sported black boards too). It had a little ding by the neck pocket. Guy said it didn't come with a case (MF shows they do, did I get gipped?). Could use a coil tap and tone knob, but I'm not missing either. Neck pup is very good for high gain, and I can get some great clean sounds for a humbucker, especially in the middle position. It's kinda P-90-ish. Not quite single coil, not quite PAF.

I bought a Spider II 15 watter for a practice amp, and even through that POS it sounds incredible ;) :D Cannot wait to get it home and run it through the MESA.

am I the only one who likes this guitar? I never see anyone discussing it here. I wanna buy another one now as a backup since they are no longer being made. Are the american made ones that much better?

Re: HOWY CWAP! Why didn't you guys tell me?

You're not at all. I really like them, and if you head over to tips and clips you can hear some of Rid's stuff, which is done on the cheaper wolfgang with a pup change - and his tone is great.

Re: HOWY CWAP! Why didn't you guys tell me?

Nope, I have 1999 American Std Wolfgang hardtail. Its a smokin' axe.

Re: HOWY CWAP! Why didn't you guys tell me?

Remember, at MF it's $669 with the case so no, you didn't get ripped.

These are GREAT guitars. I've got the blue quilttop and I think it's beauatiful, especially in the light.

Like you said, the neck is so unbelievably smooth, it actually makes me a better player, which I need all the help I can get!

As for the stock pickups, I love the way they sound and have no intention of replacing them. I did raise and lower the pole pieces on the bridge pup and it really balanced them out.

Congrats and enjoy that thing!

Re: HOWY CWAP! Why didn't you guys tell me?

I feel just the same as ya, It feels like it was just made for me too :laugh2:
IMO the very best guitar ive ever played and probobly the best i will ever play, I get excited every time i play mine and feel like i can "connect" with it (gots the rear trem cover removed :33: ) :smack: .As far as quality goes it's also what i think to be the best built guitar ive ever played too.I dunno if the pickups are the same in your as the US ones but I feel the same as you do too, There very Hot output pickups but they still somehow hav that vintage-ish sound to it too. Your lucky you didn't try the US one tho or you would have spent much more than you planned :laugh2:
Also EVH being my fav ads to it in some way mabye too

I still can't get over the neck on this thing tho (and don't think i ever will)
I think the reason though is that just about every guitar in production nowadays has a 1 11/16ths nut width (bar the EBMM) but the Wolfgang and EBMM's have the 1 5/8th,Only 16th of an inch thinner but IMO it makes such a BIG difference.

Enjoy your wolfie and have many years of making music with it.

You can Check out mine on the guitar show off thread

Cheers

Re: HOWY CWAP! Why didn't you guys tell me?

Sounds like you got an imported model. Peavey makes some really nice stuff, they tend to get more attention for their amps rather than their guitars, but even the import stuff is very good. Here's a tip, install a push/pull pot to split the pickups if you want the option of more strat-like tones. Those pickups are very high in output, and they sound very good when split.

Re: HOWY CWAP! Why didn't you guys tell me?

Jeff, you've been buying too much gear ... I'm starting to feel bad! :(
Enjoy the guitar. Keep playing, 'cause I'm expecting you to jam when you come down to the City!!

Re: HOWY CWAP! Why didn't you guys tell me?

I love the Wolfgangs. They play so well.

...I don't think they're ugly.

Have you played the double neck? Excellent guitar. Much better than the Epi Double Neck IMO.

Re: HOWY CWAP! Why didn't you guys tell me?

I love Wolfies! The pickups are killer, the body is solid, stable and balances well (and I don't think it's bad looking at all) and the neck feel is very natural. Wonderful axe!

Re: HOWY CWAP! Why didn't you guys tell me?

Thanx all. I was beginning to think I was crazy :D I've been searching all the online stores and they are all gone :( I'd really like a blue or maroon one :yell:

I would prefer to get one of the american versions, but AFAIC the korean one is damn good and really all I need as far as sound/playability goes. Alot of guitar for the money, and I'm no pro. Much nicer than the Ibby's, asian ESPs, Epiphones, asian Jacksons, and pretty much everything else from Asia that I've handled for build/component quality (and many of the american Fenders like the Hwy 1s). It's every bit as nice as my MIA Strat, and prolly better when you look at things like the neck joint fit, quality of tuners/bridge, etc.

I'm just sorry I based my decision not to handle one previously based on it's looks and association with EVH (whom I love, but I hate "signature" gear usually) I could have got a diff color and better playing guitar much sooner

Not perfect like I said..I'd prefer a single coil in the middle or a tap switch (and a diff color ;) ), but for 90% of what I play, it's perfect (see my influences). I'm amazed at the tone, feel, and playability for a $600 instrument. And the looks are starting to grow on me. I understand the floyd uses a heavy brass sustain block. From my initial impressions it's the best Floyd I've ever owned. Great full tone, and unlike the various licensed Floyds I've had the damn thing STAYS in tune.

I may swap pups eventually for some Duncans, but I don't think I will feel the need. They are excellent pups: vintage like vibe, but able to handle much more gain and still retain clarity. Like a beefed up, warmer, and less compressed Duncan Distortion. No mid spikes/peaks like a JB or Custom series..very even like a PAF. I'm sure they would totally rock through my 1987RI or a splawn/voodoo/bray modded plexi/800. Though I must admit I've been jonesing for those EVH duncans from the custom shop after hearing the strat clips on the Bray amp mods site.

I gotta find another one. Time to start combing the brick and mortar music stores :D

Between the MESA F-50 and this Wolfgang, I'm just ecstatic (if ya couldn't tell) :D

Re: HOWY CWAP! Why didn't you guys tell me?

I own and prefer the American made Wolfgangs, but I've been impressed with the EXP Wolfgangs I've played far more than I thought I would. The necks on the EXP's do differ from the USA models, but it's still comfortable and has a nice feel. Enjoy!

Re: HOWY CWAP! Why didn't you guys tell me?

I happen to love the sunburst color :)

Re: HOWY CWAP! Why didn't you guys tell me?

Played on an American made Wolfgang yesterday. Liked the action and sound. The guitar felt small to me, like the headstock was too close to the body or something. Compact is the word. It had some of those black-coated strings, black diamonds? Didn't care for those. All in all, the guitar was pretty cool and I would like to sit down with one for a while.

Re: HOWY CWAP! Why didn't you guys tell me?

They are very high quality guitars, but there are a few things about them that bug me, so mine will likely be up for sale soon. Mostly a personal preference thing.
