HSH Guitars

Not a fan of HSH.....unless its a beat up 1957 black stratocaster with 2 DiMarzio Super Ds with trim rings...........am i giving it away??? Lol

The idea's cool, but I've found that I'd almost always rather have a single coil in the neck than a full sized humbucker (firebird pickups work too).

Occasional lurker here. I don't do custom wiring schemes as much as I did years ago, but I did a HSH one recently that I've never seen anywhere: the two HBs on a 5-way giving sort of PRS combinations, and a push/pull to swap in the middle single in positions 2-4.

push/pull pushedpush/pull pulled
1.neck HBneck HB (unchanged)
2.HB outer coilsneck outer + middle single
3.both HBsmiddle single
4.HB inner coilsbridge inner + middle single
5.bridge HBbridge HB (unchanged)

One of the HBs has the magnet flipped, so all positions except the single coil alone are hum canceling.

It's a Jazz in the neck, a Custom alnico 8 in the bridge, and a Rio Grande single. Sounds pretty good.

I ended up with one bank on the superswitch unused, so I wired in different tone caps for different positions. The 2-4 positions were very bright...

Wow, that really seems like a useful scheme for an HSH. I bet other people here could use this idea as well.

The guitar I've owned the longest is an HSH. Black Korina Warmoth LP from 2008 that I finished myself. It was my first and last attempt at finishing a guitar body, haha. Wenge neck with a ziricote fretboard. I remember selling my favorite Gibson Les Paul in 2008 because I loved this Warmoth so much. 18 years later, I still love the Warmoth, but I kinda wish I would have kept the Gibby, for sentimental reasons. Oh well.

It has been so long since I wired it. I don't remember what I did without looking at it, but I did a few wiring tricks. I know I can run all 3 pups in single coil or humbucking modes, individually, with my push/pull volume knob. I think I have the mid and bridge on the tone knobs.

It's loaded with Duncans: Jazz neck, STK-S4 mid, and Jazz bridge. It was my number 1 from 2008 to 2015. Many players fall in love with this guitar after playing it even though it isn't much to look at.

I think it's because I have over 10,000 hours of playing on it. It settled in nicely over the years. Now it barely gets played and I will never build/seek an HSH guitar again, but I do love this one...

Dang. Now I'm wanting an HSH.

If I had one, I'd probably do a mag flip on the neck, so it would be hum-cancelling with the bridge when split to inner coils. Also, I'd use a neck pup in the middle so it would also be hum-cancelling when used with the neck or bridge stud coils. Then I'd use a Superswitch, and do:

1. Bridge
2. Bridge (inner coil) + middle
3. Bridge / Neck (inner coils)
4. Neck (inner coil) + middle
5. Neck

That should yield a pretty good selection of tones with just Vol /Tone / 5-way. All positions humbucking.

This seems like the best arrangement for HSH I've seen. All 5 of those would be useful to me.

I like that, but I'd probably end up doing outer coils for the middle position.

I was also thinking it could be a fun project to do a "fake" HSH where you have humbuckers that kind of sound like single coils.

Humbucker From Hell neck
Duckbucker middle
Bluesbucker bridge

Then you'd use a standard 5 way switch

Well, Steve uses the old version primarily, and I get why he does- it is very unique to him, which is what a signature model should be. The newer version was made for his work with Deep Purple, which didn't use all the sounds in the old one. I also think it was easier on his right hand, which has suffered from arthritis for years.

yeah, sucks about his right hand. his picking style is so unique. i get the old version works for steve, its his baby! but its not the most user friendly switching setup. even the ernie ball guy at the booth had a difficult time explaining it to me at namm forever ago
