Hsh pickups for ash body with maple neck and ebony fingerboard

Hi everybody,

I'm having a HSH superstrat-style guitar made with ash body, maple neck and ebony fingerboard. I would like to have a bit of advice regarding the pickups. There is a 5 way selector as wel as a mini toggle for coil splitting purposes. I like to play blues, dirty as well as cleaner. I would also like the guitar to be able to handle a bit heavier stuff like punk or metal sometimes, but also some brighter, funkier stuff. I know this is a lot to ask :-)

I was thinking about this combo:

Bridge: Custom custom trembucker
Middle: ssl-1
Neck: Pearly gates humbucker

Will these do allright with the woods?
Will these humbuckers split well (and combine with the middle)?

Thanks!

Ok, those are all good choices for pickups but keep in mind the SSL-1 will sound pretty quiet next to those humbuckers (especially the Custom Custom). When split the output levels will be a bit closer between the PGn and the SSL-1 but the split CC will still be a bit louder (which is good for using the bridge position for lead).

Overall, those are great pickups for a Strat.

I'd go with

Alternative 8 : thick, fat tone with a lot of detail and harmonics.
SSL1: middle, good choice. don't use it 'alone', since it will be a major drop in output, it is great to get those stratty quack tones when you go in the 2nd and 4th position with an auto coil split.
sentient: splits great, great neck humbucker tones etc.

pearly is a bit too mushy for my taste, same goes for the custom custom.

Hey Nick,
I was about to start a similar thread when I saw yours. I hope you don't mind my hijacking.
I also have an ash body with a Warmoth maple/rosewood neck and I'm looking for something in the vintage to medium output range to replace the EMG 89/SA/89 set currently in that guitar. I have recently purchased a PRS 513 and need something a little closer to it's output level to minimize fiddling with my amp when changing guitars. My main amp is a Boogie Mk4 and usually use only a wah and compressor in between. I get all the distortion I could ever want from the amp. A TC Electronics G-Major in the amps loop supplies the rest of the effects.
I'm leaning towards Pearlys with a SSL-1 or -2 in the middle but wondering how that will sound with the split Pearlys. Also looking at WLHs and A2Pros with maybe an APS2 in the middle. Then you have to think about RWRP or not, stagger or not...
And what about the Stag Mag? It may be too hot for the neck, maybe a Jazz would pair with that and give a good single coil sound?
What about a 59/Cust with Aps2 in the middle and Jazz in the neck?
The P-rails look like a great concept but the neck is too fat in the bottom for my tastes, at least in the sound samples.
So many choices and it's hard to know what these different combos will sound like till you try them and like you, I'm looking for some input from the vets here hoping someone else is as nuts about versatility as I am. I know there will be compromises and I'm fine with that, I'm not Jackson Browne and I can't take 28 guitars to a gig.
Call me Overwhelmed and thanks for putting up with my ramblings.
Gregg

Irongear Blues engine seem like a good deal also. No seymour duncans though.
