HSH w/S1 to do Series/Parallel and auto-split

Hey all,

I’ve searched high and low and haven’t been able to find this diagram anywhere. The Suhr Ian Thornley models have a scheme I haven’t really found anywhere and looking to achieve it with a super switch and an S1.

The basics are an HSH with Autosplitting humbuckers (using the outside coils) in position 2/4, and both humbuckers in position 3. I’d then want to make the S1 simply control series/parallel (up/down). Seems like all wiring that does series and parallel doesn’t auto-split.

Would anyone be able to help me put something together or point me in the right direction?

Cheers!

Something to keep in mind is that if you have both humbuckers on and split, you'd have to flip a magnet on one if you want them to remain in phase and humbucking.

Before you go through all that rigamarole, the way you suggested is not how the Ian Thornley models are wired at all. They are wired like a traditional stratocaster except each tone control let's you put one of the humbuckers in parallel.

If you are set on your proposed wiring scheme, before you spend $50 in parts, what pickups are you going to try this with, and have you already tested how the pickups sound in your guitar in parallel?

Hey Christopher, I've already got the parts. I'm not sure why you think it's otherwise? I've watched multiple reviews of his guitars and as per my understanding, the original JM and the Strat definitely are wired that way, albeit with individual slider or push/push switches for each HB's series/parallel. Even came across this German site with a similar request.

If that's the case I'd say the best place to start would be to contact Suhr. The S1 can do what you want, but it would be a much more efficient use of time to find the original wiring and adapt in then to try and reinvent the wheel.

Suhr definitely has a diagram, the question is if they'd want to give it to you.

Of course Suhr has got it, but thinking others in the community may have wanted something like this so thought I’d check here first.

Specifically trying to find the combination of Autosplit along with Series-Parallel options.

Thanks all!

Can you clarify what you want in position 3? I can sort of read that both ways (either wanting split humbuckers in position 3 vs. full humbuckers affected by S1 in position 3).

What pickups do you have? Are you sure the middle pickup will be in phase with the humbucker screw coils?

Hey there,

For position 3 I’d want neck and bridge humbuckers together, with them each in series or parallel, depending of the position of the s1.

For pickups, I’ve got a 59 in the neck and JB in the bridge. For the middle for now I’ve got an original set of 90’s Japanese SC’s, so was using the middle one to keep the 2/4 positions quiet.

Cheers

This should get you there. Duncan colors for the humbuckers. S1 is a master series/parallel in positions 1, 3, and 5 (switch "up" is series). Positions 2 and 4 split to the screw coils and add the middle single, and the S1 does nothing.

Without knowing the wind direction or polarity of the single coil, there's no guarantee positions 2 and 4 will be in phase and humbucking, but as far as the switching goes, this should work. Note I've labelled the poles of the S1 - these switches aren't symmetrical, so be mindful of which pole is which.
