HSH wiring help

Guitars & Cars

Hello,
I am new to the forum, and hope this is the right place to go.
I do use the SD wiring help schematics often for projects, but can't find what I am looking for there. Hoping someone can help.

I have HSH guitar that is that I am looking for a setup like the following:
Position 1 . Bridge
Position 2 . Bridge / Middle
Position 3 . Bridge / Neck
Position 4. Neck / Middle
Postion 5. Neck
w/ coils split option

I have a standard 5 way switchcraft , 500K pots (one standard CTS, one push/pull for coil splitting ) 22 and 47 capacitors, and anything else that I should need. Thanks for your help in advance.

Re: HSH wiring help

With the stuff you have, you could use the push pull pot to engage the neck and bridge at any time in addition to the 5 way switch to get neck and bridge combo or all 3 pickups. Then you could use the 5 way switch to auto split the humbuckers in positions 2 and 4. If you want the switch to automatically go to neck/bridge in position 3 you need a super switch or mega switch.

I’m hoping to keep the functionality simple, and control the pickup switching with the 5 way only. It may mean that I’ll have to make the middle switch for all 3 pickups, and the push/pull for splitting the coils.

Re: HSH wiring help

Amen. I even question the use of switch to split. For 2&4 I get it, but you might as well have the 5-way take care of it for you. I can see some utility in it for position 3: inner humbucker coils if the axe is a 24-fretter (or outer if you're into that kind of thing).

Anyway, a 5-Way Super Switch is what you need.

Yes! I realize that now. I’m going to have to grab a super switch and put it in.
Thanks!

Re: HSH wiring help

I sketched this up...

5WSS (HSH2).png

1: bridge in series mode
2: bridge slug + middle
3: bridge in series + neck in series*
4: neck screw + middle
5: neck in series mode

(*) push/pull on position 3 will select inner slug coils; does not affect any other position.

This assumes a standard polarity (south) single coil. Flip the magnet in the neck pickup. Use the standard orientation of the humbuckers so the screw coils are the outer coils and the slug coils are the inner coils.

I think it's possible to do some consolidation in order to free up one of the poles of the 5-way. A free pole would allow you to select multiple tone controls or do something like apply a 500k resistor in parallel with the volume control which could be handy for positions 2, 3 and 4.

Re: HSH wiring help

Slow Sunday, I guess. Besides, I like puzzles.

2: bridge slug + middle
3: bridge in series + neck in series*
4: neck screw + middle
5: neck in series*

(*) The push/pull will select inner slug coils on position 3 and will split the neck to the outer coil on position 5. I could have put the neck in parallel mode on position 5 instead, but it would consume the 4th pole of the 5-way.
