HSH with duckbucker pickup choice and wiring question

Hello,

Some background first:
I'm buiding a budget partscaster from used parts. I need a LP and strat/tele in one. I know it will be a compromise and I already have Strat and LP type guitars. Just don't want to take 2 guitars to rehearsals.
The body is '81 Ibanez Blazer (ash), neck is Mighty Mite Jazzmaster with rosewood fb. Bridge is Gotoh FR.
The pickups is what I had lying around or were given by friend: 59 trembucker, 2-wire Duckbucker (bridge version) and mid 80s Jazz neck
Do you think it could be a good combo? In general I like low output pickups. I play through oldschool Marshalls only. Mostly 70s rocknroll (Stones, Aerosmith, Thin Lizzy) ,GN'R, RHCP, Hendrix.
Next thing is the wiring. The logic should be the same as Everything Axe set but my bridge pickup is much lower output than JB. Will it match Duckbucker? How are the pickups combined in positions 2 and 4? I guess both coils of bridge/neck should be used to be humbucking in notch positions with Duckbucker. If I'm right should humbuckers be in parallel or in series to get nice quack?

I haven't used these pickups together, but it sounds like it would be an awesome combination.

Re: HSH with duckbucker pickup choice and wiring question

I think the combo would be fine. As for getting good quack in series or parallel, I'm assuming you're talking about whether the bridge or neck pickup is running in series or parallel (not the connection BETWEEN the two pickups, which is generally parallel). My H-S-H has a JB in the bridge, Hot Stack center, and Jazz Neck... and I get decent enough quack out of (what would translate to) the 2 and 4 positions when the pups are in series, but I think I get BETTER strat quack if I split the coil of the neck or bridge.

Re: HSH with duckbucker pickup choice and wiring question

So probably humbucker wired parallel would give better quack?

Thanks! This is really helpful! Think I'll install some push pulls to be able to do such switching. There was plenty of string sound but anyway I liked split and parallel best in notch positions.

Glad it helped, even though it was just a crappy iPhone video!

This is a great pickup combo! Yeah, I agree with the parallel option here, and it will still be hum-cancelling. I wonder if you can auto parallel the humbuckers with a super 5-way switch, eliminating the need for push pulls.

Good idea! [emoji1303]

I was thinking exactly the same. It's not possible with 10-terminal super switch. I guess I would need 20-terminal mega switch.
For now I wired it with 1 tone 1 vol, 5way superswitch, 2 on/on/on jazzmaster switches. Didn't play it yet cause I need a professional to rout the body for FR.
I can choose split/parallel/series for both humbuckers separately. Can't do auto parallel in 2nd and 4th position. I will see what I like best and maybe then buy mega switch to make 2nd position independent on 1st and 4th on 5th. I'm still concerned about output missmatch between duckbucker and 59 (humbucker in parallel).

Re: HSH with duckbucker pickup choice and wiring question

I think the 59 in parallel would be fine with a Duckbucker- the output of a parallel humbucker goes down quite a bit. I like the idea of trying an idea out with several options and then hard-wiring it to the combinations you will actually use. I hate having 2 or more moves to get to a sound I like. It is clumsy, and I can never do it in time.

Re: HSH with duckbucker pickup choice and wiring question

Exactly, I'd like to use one switch to get the sound I want.
I'm not afraid that the 59 will have too high output but the opposite. Duckbucker bridge is 2.9K (hardwired parallel). 59 in parallel would be 8.8/4=2.2K Does it work like this?

Re: HSH with duckbucker pickup choice and wiring question

yeah thats basically it although its actually two 4.4k coils in series = 8.8k and two 4.4k coils in parallel = 2.2k it should sound very cool.

Thanks for answer. Need to wait till 5th when my luthier comes back from holiday. Can't wait. I will let you know how it sounds
