HSS Combination for my Black Hwy 1 Strat

I've been looking around and researching an HSS pickup combination for my Hwy 1 Strat. Currently, it has a Duncan Little '59 and two Dimarzio Area 58's. I dig the 58's, but not crazy about the little '59. Thinking of trying the Custom/59 hybrid with the 58's. I would need a new pickguard, but I think that will get me to where I need to go. Anyone else tried the Custom/59 Hybrid with Dimarzio Area single coils?

Need to know:
1) Genres of music you will play with this guitar
2) Amp(s) you play through
3) What the lil 59 does that you are not crazy about.

Re: HSS Combination for my Black Hwy 1 Strat

I play rock music in the band right now, and it's a mix of prog/modern rock, instrumental, and some stuff that overlaps into industrial at times. Most of the industrial stuff I play is on a different Baritone Guitar. The amps I play include an Egnater Rebel 30 with a Mesa 212 3/4 open back cabinet, a Fender Super Sonic 22 combo, and sometimes I will use my Egnater Tweaker 40 in place of the R30 with the same mesa cab.

The Little 59 is ok, I just don't think it sounds like a full size humbucker. And admittedly, I didn't expect it to. Just wanted to try a single coil size 'bucker with the Area 58's and it seemed easy enough that I wouldn't have to replace the whole pickguard and all of that. I like a vintage crunchy kind of bordering on psychedelic tone at times, and like for things to clean up nicely. I had a super strat years ago with an HSS config of EMG's and really liked how versatile it was, so trying to get back to that but with passive pickups. Probably I shouldn't have sold that HM Strat.

I was looking at the 59/Custom hybrid because it seems to have the characteristics I want. Only other SD pickup I've considered is the Custom 5. Looked at a few Dimarzio PAF offerings also, but I can't make sense of all their different offerings.

Interestingly enough, I have a similar setup. In the below Strat I've got a C/59 Hybrid with DiMarzio Area 67s in the middle and neck. I've got a 500K volume with 250K tones for the neck and middle, no tone on the bridge.

Go for a Perpetual Burn, It's simply AMAZING!

It also cleans up nicely with volume pot, and I bet that it would fantastically pair with Areas!

GilmourD - that's an awesome looking strat! What styles of music do you play on that guitar? Do you have anything online I could hear?

Right now I'm in a pop-rock band. Here's a track where I actually played this guitar.

I hope that doesn't derail the thread. LOL

That's hot! Can't resist a good HSS :).

Update: So I ended up scoring a Dimarzio 36th anniversary paf locally here for a really good price. This weekend I'm going to wire it up in my strat with an HSS 'guard I bought from mojotone recently. I will share the results over the next few days.
