HSS Guitars. What do you have in yours?

Re: HSS Guitars. What do you have in yours?

I wrote a blog about my HSS setup. I still love this setup, which covers a lot of ground (except, maybe metal).

Good read, thanks! I like the concept, but may use a Demon instead of a hybrid in the bridge slot. I just love the openness of 'buckers wound to around 10k.

Area 58/ Area 58/ Norton

The Norton will be changed at some point, because it's timbre is significantly darker than the single coils.

Seriously thinking about the 59/Custom hybrid.

How stratty are the Area 58's?

JB + Hot Rails + Hot Rails
Modern Player HSS Set

I only have 1 HSS right now:. Fender Shawbucker, SD Lipstick Tube in the middle and neck. Weird, yes. But I kinda dig it for the tonal variety.

How good are the cleans with the Duncan set up?

Cleans are great but not pristine—the Hotrails and JB always have a bit of “bite” to them.

The Bill Lawrences handle cleans much better, IMO. But the JB+Hotrails combo nails the rock sound and gets incredible harmonics.

I have a highly figured Warmoth swamp ash strat with Seymour Duncan Antiquity P90 in the neck, Antiquity strat in the middle and a JB in the bridge.

I have a Warmoth alder capped with quilted maple tele with Seymour Duncan vintage mini humbucker in the neck, vintage P90 in the middle and a Five-Two tele pickup in the bridge.

I'm putting together a strat. It'll have the same mahogany body and maple neck. I have a spare Seymour Duncan Custom and a Screamin Demon to use on the bridge. I'll have to figure out the other two single coils

That's got to be a nice set up. I have a DG20 pickguard in one of my strats and it kills.

It's good but what I like even better is I took my HSH Fender Heartfield, which is really an RG with Fender on the headstock, and wired position 2 such that it's 1 neck coil and the middle pickup. Lots of options on that one.

I have a Dimarzio Air Zone in the bridge of my Sterling. Sounds great.

Yup. I always have my HSS guitars set to automatically split in position 2. I don't much care for middle singles combined with full bridge humbucker.
Do you split the neck & middle when they are combined?
Which coil mixes with the STK-S4m?
Do you have a wiring diagram you use?

Re: HSS Guitars. What do you have in yours?

My friend built a pickguard that used the 89/SA/SA combo with a push/pull volume to split the 89, and the SPC & EXG modules. That was a cool guitar.

Yes to the first question, slug coil, and I just used a simple diagram I got from SD.

How loud/aggressive is the 89? I have a 85/SA set up in a Eashburn Mercury and the 85 is fat and LOUD.

It’s been nearly two decades since I heard that guitar, but it seemed to be right around the 85 level.
