Hy folks!
I have and old MIJ Jackson Performer (very rare, it's basically a PS2 but it doesn't have any other marks) with a Custom 5 in the bridge, and a Hot Rails in the neck. I'm mostly a metal guy, but I play clean and bluesy stuff too. I don't like too high output pu-s. First I had an SH6 in bridge, but it was too much, now in the Custom 5 finally found the bridge tone I wanted. But the Hot Rails doesn't sounds allright. The clean sounds (for me) are just very bad. It has too much bass, doesn't responds for finger pick, and it's kind of muddy. And when it's tapped, it's still not better, but suddenly it has too much treble. And when I put overdrive I have to adjust the EQ on the amp. With the stock Jackson pickups, it wasn't necesarry. But when I put on some drive, it gets better. It's kinda like Paul Gibert's tone, very dark with great sustain. That's the only thing I like about this pu, so I decided to change it. I have experiences about DiMarzio-s, but SD-s were always better IMO.
But I'm not really into Single -Coils. First of course I thought about YJM Fury pu-s (I'm a huge Malmsteen fan), but I'm afraid of the they may not have enough output.
Then the SSL3 sound like a good deal (or a SSL5 maybe), but is it really good? It's important to have not much noise, and have brighter tone. The website says "the SSL-3 Hot For Strat has plenty of output, and the reduced treble response can make the hum less noticeable under higher gain." I don't want a dark sounding pu. again.
Or the SSL-4? But the site says it' more sounding like a P-90.
What's actually is important:
Have a great sustain, and a little boosted output (for a single coil)
Has to work well with the Custom 5 in the bridge
Have low noise
Have more like a bright tone
Have great clean strat tones
So what would be your choice? I know maybe I'm kind of choosy, but I want to buy the right pickup.
Cheers!
