HSS set that will balance well.

Re: HSS set that will balance well.

I like your suggestion of the stks7 in neck and the stks4 in the middle. Still set on the custom/59 hybrid. To run a humbucker on a 250k pot, how would that effect it? Make it darker/brighter?

For the Hybrid, 250k would make it darker. I think HSS (with master controls) sound better with 500k on everything. Especially if the SS pickups are either stacks or Little Humbuckers.

Hi man...

Just to ask you about 59/custom hybrid vs custom custom...

I`m one custom custom lover...I love those mids and singing tone but too brigth to match with yjm, as you know...

I´ve tried perpetual burn, you know too, and now I´m trying one dimzario at-1...the at-1 doesn´t like me...at-1 has strat sound, but the sound is too lineal.

I like so much the custom custom but I´ve sold it, so I´m thinking to buy another custom custom or maybe try one of 59/custom hybrid...what do you think?

Re: HSS set that will balance well.

I had 'lil demons in the neck and bridge with a duck in the middle of one of my strats, but I missed the iconic strat neck tone.
That's the beauty of having more than one Strat: not every one needs to sound like a Strat.

My basswood HSS sounds much better with side-by-side singles than it does with true singles, so that's what I've got. It might actually sound killer with stacks, but I haven't tried them in it.

Interesting, I chose my values because 250k and no tone on the HB is more or less the resistance of two 500k pots, which suits the humbucker. And then the two single coils have their two 250k volume and tone pots, so they are happy.

To the OP, the pot values are mainly personal preference. If the HB is two bright compared to the single coils, drop the volume pot to 200k and maybe the tone pots up to 300k. If the HB is too dark, maybe change the volume to 300k and the tones to 200k. But I think all 250k (or all 500k if you want it brighter) should work just fine.

I really dig the Custom Custom, too. It is perfect for a 1-guitar band, and the mids just take up a huge swath of the sonic space. The Hybrid is much more scooped, but not shockingly so, like the Custom 5. The Hybrid sound more vintage, and is better for more a a variety of music, to me. It also sounds better with single coils.

thanks you...

I´ll try one hybrid, I always can back to custom custom if it doesn´t like me or match with yjm...

by the way, my experience let me know than SD yjm aren´t good to match with hum/trembucker...YJM is for me the best quality stratocaster sound, but complete sets are required, those yjm pickups are so hard to match with others and humbuckers are a hell to match...

SD PB perpetual burn, is a very good pickup, has one strat sound and well balanced, but dynamically seems to be only for leads sounds...rhythms has no life neither dynamics, but for lead guitars PB is a trully killer pickup, really good for leads...

Dimarzio At-1 andy timmons, is one of the worst pickups I´ve tried, it´s like the cheapest PB pickup, only for leads too, no dynamics and a ridiculous tone..it´s only for...I don´t know LOL...

TB-11 custom custom, I fall in love when I play first time with one custom custom, those mids and singing notes, good for leads good for rhythms, dynamically rich...but those little bass just kill the pickup to pair with yjm singles

anyways the tb-11 is the best option for now, so I will try one hybrid for my taste...

Maybe you'll prefer the a 59 or Custom-5. They both have solid bass.

just because I would like to try hybrid...

Hybrid is one 59 and one custom 5, isnt it?

I think the custom 5 is the same pickup as custom custom but magnets different...the 59 is one classic, but I´m not sure this works in one stratocaster at bridge as well than custom custom...

In the other hand, I got another strat ulta with lace sensors, and dual red/red sounds really well, maybe this could be another option to pair with yjm singles at middle/neck, lace sensors are so versatile and not too high gain...red/red or red/blue should be one interesting option too...

Yeah, I think they're going back in my old photo flame strat that is basswood, but with two ducks and the demon in the bridge.

The scoop is pretty bad for me. I'm going to try an A2 in there before I give up on mine.

I was refering to what you said about the Custom Custom. But yes, the 59/C is a great pickup.

Re: HSS set that will balance well.

Has anyone suggested SSL-1 neck and middle with a Screamin' Demon bridge yet. The Demon has enough treble that it stays bright and clear on 250k master volume and master tone. It's extremely versatile, and has a good split sound when you use the hex half with the middle single coil. When it is split by itself, the volume when you go from neck to bridge (hex coil) blends great and doesn't drop off or jump up. Don't let the name fool you, it's really similar in output to a 59 or something like that, and will work well with those singles in whatever potentiometer solution you want (classic or brighter tone). I was stuck using a master volume and tone on my IOS USB Deluxe strat, unless I wanted to just use the built in usb output, but not use the headphone jack on the guitar (I ran 1 volume and 2 tones for awhile). Then on a whim I went back to 250k master volume and tone with the SSL-1's and the Demon, it was still bright (I really like a bright humbucker sound), had great note definition, and clarity. Pretty on par with my Pegasus that is in a Schecter SVSS. There are a ton of great options though, when I had 1 volume and 2 tones I ran the SSL-1's with a Pearly Gates (no tone on it), I ended up wanting tighter bass, so I guess it wasn't a total whim trying the Demon, but in the end it worked great.

Are you sure you have the at-1 installed correctly? It should sound nothing like a strat. It should be a fairly warm sounding pickup.

Yep, couldn't agree more. It's top 2 or 3 humbuckers for HSS setup in my opinion.

Re: HSS set that will balance well.

They're a tad weak split, but I do think they play well with vintage output singles; and they do well with 250k pots, which I prefer with most Duncan singles (including side-by-sides and stacks, except for particularly dark guitars).

OT since this isn't HSH, but the PGn sounds sa-weet split.

The A8 version split sounds stellar, but I'm not a fan of it when it isn't split

yes, that's right installed...and yes, at-1 has a little strat sound, not splitted here...

The matter with at-1 is than sounds well, but only works for leads...there is no dynamic on rhythms and is too high gain to pair with yjm at neck/middle...at-1 plays metal while yjm are playing blues at same gain and sound LOL...

WOW...thanks Mincer:

59/hybrid is installed yet, it´s simply awesome to pair with yjm...
Well I did some wiring changes, 500k volume pot, 500k singles yjm and 300k 59/hybrid + 3 way switch for coil tap...

I miss a little the cc mids and singing tone, but 59/hybrid now match so well with yjm...

now work is finished...time to play ;)
