HSS Strat - Alternative 8 and Quarter Pound singles or true single coil middle

Re: HSS Strat - Alternative 8 and Quarter Pound singles or true single coil middle

Thanks a lot Clint. You have helped me immensely. Everything is set to go now.

Do you have the diagram for this configuration (1 humbucker, 1 single, 1 stack; 3 switches, coil split, coil tap and bridge + neck)? Would you recommend any more modifications?

You're welcome. You'll have to let us know how it turns out!

Here's the main diagram with bridge on: https://docs.google.com/gview?embed...-content/uploads/2016/05/3S_5W_1VppENB_2T.pdf
To make it bridge + neck on, you'll need a mini on/on switch with 6 lugs.

Here's the concept for splitting or tapping: https://forum.seymourduncan.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=46749&d=1380556365

To tap the quarter pound, send white to the 5 way switch and black to the back of the pot like usual. Then send red to the middle lug on the mini toggle, and run a wire from the lower lug on the mini toggle to ground on the back of the pot.

To split the JB, send black into the bridge on diagram (middle lug), and the rest to the split diagram: red and white to the middle lug on the mini toggle that you're using for split, and green and bare to the lower lug and grounded to the back of the pot.

You're also going to want to run a ground wire to the base of the switch, and ground wires to the side panels of the mini toggles. It makes for a lot of wires, but it's worth it. It keeps everything dead quiet when you're practicing clean. Flux helps the solder to stick.

If you want to wire it this way where flipping the switch engages BOTH the neck and bridge, you need an ON/ON mini toggle with 6 terminals.

Another mod that I thought was interesting that I haven't tried but other members say is great is a "partial coil split." Where you replace the wire from the bottom lug of the mini toggle to the back of the pot with a 4.7k resistor. This keeps a little bit of the cut coil active so it makes your split coil sound fuller.

Ok, great. For the other mods the 3 pin switch works, right?

Interesting mod, partial coil split is definitely nice. It would be a 4th switch, right? Lol, you can get an immense variety of tones with these mods. I'll start with the mandatory ones (split/tap/bridgeneck) and then with more experience and when I get bored, I'll add some more.

What about the bridge tone mod? Do you think its essential?

Thanks

Yes, for the tap and split 3 pin switches are good.

I meant to use the partial split interchangeably with the regular split. Not to add a 4th switch. But I guess you could ha!

I like to be able to adjust the tone on every pickup. You could probably wire neck and middle to tone 1 and bridge to tone 2, or find a scheme that works for you. On mine, I just went with a master volume and master tone to make room for the 3 mini switches.

Ok. Amazing. I think this idea of 2 knobs is great, but only problem would be if I wanted to put a 500k pot for the humbucker. It would share the 500k pot for the singles. I'm actually going for all 250k (they said jb is better with 250k). Actually I could just rewire if I wanted a 500k humb, but it would look ugly with the empy hole.

So 2 250k volumes and a master tone?

Re: HSS Strat - Alternative 8 and Quarter Pound singles or true single coil middle

In around a month it will be ready and I'll be back to show this beauty :D

Re: HSS Strat - Alternative 8 and Quarter Pound singles or true single coil middle

I had QP's in neck and bridge on my strat. It's one of the best bridge pickups for rock I've tried, but had really muddy overdriven tone on neck position even with 500k volume. It had awesome clean tone, but wasn't much good otherwise. Coil tap helps, but it's not that "sparkling" you might think, it has sort of "teleish" tone.

You can probably make it work in a middle. But it will probably take some tweaking to get the cap and pot values to suit each pickup.

Re: HSS Strat - Alternative 8 and Quarter Pound singles or true single coil middle

Thanks for the note Jacew. My pots are 250k, let's see how it goes, so I'll change what's needed.

Everything has arrived now. I'm afraid the QP they sent me is not RWRP. Is it tapped, but I don't see mention about being RWRP. What are the consequences, if its a "standard" QP in mid position?

Another question, I bought the STK-4. Is it possible to change it's pickup cover? I thought so before buying, but it seems its "glued" together.

As far as the cover, I think those are glued on, so no go. What color do you want?

As far as repercussions for the regular polarity QP, it means the neck and middle won't be hum-cancelling. Not a huge deal, but you have to decide how important it is.

Well I wanted to be able to change it..to black or mint green (bought parchment). But it's not that big of a deal, I just think Seymour Duncan should say about it in it's description.

Regarding QP, I made the test (putting pickups and verifying if the push or repel) and its indeed RWRP.

Just have to mount it now :)

THanks
