HSS Strat HB for Classic to Heavy Tones?

Re: HSS Strat HB for Classic to Heavy Tones?

Thanks for the information.

Might go with the Custom then, hoping it's not too bright (been reading that in so many threads).

Re: HSS Strat HB for Classic to Heavy Tones?

Go with the 59/Custom hybrid. It comes w/A5 mag. I switched mine to UOA5, and love it. It allows you to play all genre of music. It also splits nicely.

I put a 59/Custom in my alder FatStrat right before the Dr. said "no more" in the middle of May for what was a completely torn tendon in the extensor muscles in my left arm. The p/u did exactly what I wanted it to do. Brought out the basses and mids w/o loosing the highs; acting like a well-rounded bridge humbucker. Beats the hell out of the DH-1 that was in there. The S-1 switching handles it well and it is suited to a rosewood fretboard. I am happier with the guitar than I have been in the 4 years I've had it (2008 special order).

Now I'm waiting for the cast to come off so I can play it again and again.

How much is the difference between the regular Custom and the Hybrid?
After all the Hybrid costs a good bite more than the normal Custom.

Have no idea. Tone was my main concern. A C-note? Check with a dealer - you doing the install yourself? I recommend a DIY if you can. I found it necessary to get the Trembucker for correct string spacing; the standard p/u did not line up with the E,A, & D strings. (My luthier should have listened to me on that one.) I think the cost was the same though for the trembucker.

FWIW the guitar in my avatar is the one that was upgraded. The pic is not up to date. I went with the zebra model to add a little pizazz. Turned out great!

Definitely going with a Trembucker, going to install it myself or with the help of a friend.
Looks like I'll be going with a Custom or maybe the 59/Custom Hybrid if it doesn't cost too much. The Custom seems to be a good pickup for what I want and a good "base" as well for magnet swaps if I want to do any in the future.

Man, this is going to be a tough one to kill. It keeps coming up. Parallel is the same output level as split. You can't use DCR to judge output level when coils are in parallel. Does a Strat, in either "notch" position, drop by half? :cool2:
Two batteries in parallel is still 1.5 volts.

Sorry, I should have said 1/4 the DCR. However, I do notice that parallel output is less than split, to my ears anyway. Could depend on the pickup.

I changed the pups in my HSS strat to Pearly Gates Humbucker/ SSL-1 / SSL-1 and it is now my favorite gigging guitar. Hard to describe sound with words so here are a few you-tube links of me playing it:

Re: HSS Strat HB for Classic to Heavy Tones?

I've always found trying to mix 2 singles and a humbucker in a strat frustrating. There aren't that many humbuckers that work well with the 2 250k pots that the single coils need. The JB works with 250k, but I don't like the JB. The Custom/Custom and Pearly Gates work in a strat, but I've usually figured out a different wiring scheme that at least gives them a 500k volume pot (2 vol, 1 tone). That changes the way the knobs usually work on a strat, and I don't like that.

I didn't like the C5 in a strat at all. The Demon works OK, but again, I didn't like it with 250k pots, and the same goes for the 59.

I'm using a Dimarzio Virtual Hot Paf right now which runs great with 250k pots, but I'm still not too crazy about how it meshes with the singles (Fender Fat 50's)

Trying to mix Fender singles and Duncan Humbuckers is also a pain in the butt because of the phase and polarity issues.
