HSS wiring diagramme

Hey guys,

I just planned the wiring for my HSS strat and would really appreciate if some of you could check the diagramme and point to mistakes I may have made.

I'll be using two Classic Stacks for neck and middle and a Duncan Custom for the bridge. Switching should be:
1. Full bridge humbucker
2. Split HB and split middle
3. Full middle
4. Split middle and split neck
5. Full neck

I'll be using one volume for bridge/neck and one for middle and a master tone. In the bottom of the diagramme I left out some of the ground and cap connections because I ran out of space.

Appreciate any input.

Edit: I have one regular and one RW/RP Classic Stack to keep positions 2 and 4 hum canceling. Which goes in the neck, which in the middle with this wiring? Couldn't find a definite answer by forum search.

It looks good except that you can't really do dual volume controls like this. Both pots will control all three pups all the time. Look at the middle vol for example. When its turned down, it will short the output to ground, killing all signal regardless of if you have neck or bridge selected. On a Les Paul, the volumes come before the switch, but you can't really do that because you have three pups.

I'd ditch the idea of twin volumes. :raincloud

Damn, you're right!

So I'll be open to suggestions what to do with the third pot rout. I really only need one master tone.

Re: HSS wiring diagramme

You could always do a switch to put the neck and middle in series for a virtual neck-ish humbucker. (Thats what I did.)

Re: HSS wiring diagramme

Hm, I already have two dual humbucker guitars. So maybe just a kill switch.

Anyway, thanks a lot!

No prob. If I think of something more creative, I'll post it. :)

Re: HSS wiring diagramme

Well you can put the middle volume to the other side of the switch so it will affect only when the middle pickup is on. This will however work just like in a LP that when in 2 or 4 positions (two pickups on) both volumes will act as master volumes. But when in 1 or 5 the middle volume won't do anything.

Re: HSS wiring diagramme

And also a cool little idea is that if you want 500k pot for the humbucker and when you swiths to the neck "singlecoil" it will act as 250k pot. Thats pretty easy to do with one resistor.

Re: HSS wiring diagramme

The basic idea of two vol controls was to be able to match output level of split humbucker and middle when in position 2. I would still be able to do so by putting one volume before the switch for either bridge or middle pickups.

Question is, which pickup has more output volume (split middle STK-4 or split SH-14) and would need to be toned down?

Also, does anyone have an answer where to put the RW/RP STK-4, middle or neck?

Re: HSS wiring diagramme

It looks like you're doing a similar project to me, although I'm just having a master volume control.

I'm doing a detailed blog as I go; you might want to check it out in case you run into problems I've already had!

For what it's worth, the diagram you've drawn matches up with the one I've drawn, where appropriate.

Re: HSS wiring diagramme

Interesting take on the 250k/500k question.

Me, since I'm a lazy guy, decided to just use 250k pots and a humbucker that would be a bit too bright for the guitar - but the 250k pot should tone down the brightness a bit.

Anyway, I'll watch out for updates on your project.
