Schecter? There is one Schecter I like. It's the C1-E/A. It's not bad...

I think you’d be on the right track with a HSS or HSH design so long as you had the ability to split the humbucker(s). Combined with a two point trem and locking tuners, I think no matter what the body shape that you’d have one heck of a versatile axe. Body shape and playability are obviously things you know that no one can really select for you.

Not that there needs to be another option/opinion throw on the table, but if I were in the market for a jack-of-all-trades guitar I would look pretty heavily at one of the Satriani model Ibanezes or one of the S Prestige models, though I don’t know what the used market is on them. New they’re 1200 for the S and 1700 for the JS. I just tend to prefer those body shapes over the RG shapes.

Yeah, the only obvious answer here is to have multiple guitars around...

Barring that, the one ride I own that I could feel comfortable dragging into just about any situation from a rock cover gig, to straight ahead jazz or thrash metal is the swamp ash PRS... H/S/H with a Custom 5, vintage rail & Alnico II in the neck. Between the taps & all I can get just about any tone needed...

I've never really found an H/S/S pickup setup that 'balances' just right for me all across the board, both clean & dirty... so I'm not a big fan of those style guitars.

One thing to consider if you're only going to have one or two guitars to cover tons of styles then it also needs to "look" right. Can't really show up to a wedding or some other "formal" gig, sit in a traditonal jazz setting with something like a Jackson & be taken seriously... IMO.

Maybe 'ya just gotta play a whole bunch of things until something blows your skirt up. Hard to put a price on that too...

Butch...I know how ya feel...ya don't wanna pay an arm and a leg, yet you want top shelf and something you really LOVE , not something you settled for ..and that generally means you are gonna have to be REALLY patient and look for a deal in used guitars like I finally happened upon.

You're adding more to the "problem" by wanting something so versatile in one guitar.

I think I'd build a warmoth, or find one of the Dual bucker or HSS strats with the S1 switching..or a VG strat if ya can swing it. That or persuse Some of the Japanese manufacturers...ESP/Edwards...Tokai...etc. Lotsa bang for the buck.

And they will cost you an arm and leg....
Or just buy a good feeling superstrat and just play, all that versatile talk is the endless stairwell to hell.
......Doh I am defently the wrong guy for this....I am never going to be able to worry much over guitars:D

I know what you mean big time. I've traded guitars forever until I finally realized that it's more my amp and effects that seemed to effect my tone.. Now days I buy something that I know I like to play and I am comfortable with, that fits good, I typically use Humbuckers as one can always split them or turn down the volume and use some EQ.. I love EQ both post and preamp.. It makes a huge difference to me and works with just about any pickup... I would tell you to get the guitar that made you want to play.. You probably know what I mean.. Get one that is made in America or Japan that will keep it's value.. Get one that is the color you can look at forever and not get tired of.. Get one that stays in tune and that when you strum it without an amp it rings loud and clear and rings for a long time.. Then you have a guitar that is probably as close to what you want as you can get.. That isn't a sure thing, but it's close.. Have you ever considered a Godin? They make some killer guitars.. I think the Godin that I had which was a bolt on, had more sustain than most Gibson LP's.. That thing was a monster and I wish I had kept it.. The only thing I didn't like was the very very flat finger board.. Sorry for talking too much, but I hope you get / find the guitar you want.. I'm like you in that I can only afford a couple guitars and one amp and a couple pedals, but I'm learning that with skill I can do about whatever I want..
