I haven't tried the actual product, but I've got some home-made ones based on a schematic I found online. The schematic was supposed to do all or most of what the Hum-X does. I found they worked really well. The Hum-X is a smaller, tidier package than the things I built; I'd probably rather have the Hum-X for that reason alone.

I use a 2 amp rig with an ABY that is made by loopmaster. The loopmaster when both amps were on was giving me some ground loop hum( nothing wrong with the loopmaster, just 2 amps will do that). The ABY is silent switching and works great, but the hum was just a touch annoying at times, so I bought a humX and it eliminated about 85% of the hum..... so I now have one on both amps. It works well. I got mine for about 60$. I like it.

ah...so they actually work huh ? $70 is a bit steep. i'd pay that for three of em.

Cheater plug will work in a lot of situations - but be careful. I'd use it on say an effects unit, but never an amp. a cheater plug in an multi-amp setup might be safe (Ask an expert before you try - I'm definitely not one), but I'm not chancing it. Thing I've been told is you want only one good path to ground.

They do work. $70 isn't too bad if you can cover your needs with one, I guess. I don't have any pics of the device. I don't have the schematic anymore; the file was deleted somehow and I haven't been able to find it again online.
Not necessarily. The Hum-X has a patented circuit for reducing the coupling path for ground-loop hum while leaving a safety valve intact so that, for safety purposes, the ground path will be pretty low-resistance to surges.
The cheater plug isn't completely safe. It does eliminate the path used by ground-loop hum, but it doesn't provide for a safe path to ground in case of surges or component failure.

thank you for your replies. my problem is that all of a sudden, for some reason about a year ago my guitars started making an UNGODLY hum. one bass and one guitar seem unaffected, but 3 others (one bass and two guitars) create a hum that is actually as loud as the signal. i have no idea why this is happening all of a sudden. the pickups in question are both single coils and humbuckers. i don't mean regular single coil hum or regular 60 Cycle hum....this hum is actually more like an BUZZ - in fact it sounds like when you touch your finger to the tip of a guitar cord that is plugged into an amp that is turned on. UNGODLY !!!!!!!! the only difference is that it dissipates when i turn my body in different directions. i have had to record guitar tracks while leaning slightly forward with one leg in the air. a funny sight i'm sure, but a major inconvenience.
the thing is, up until a year ago i had never had a problem with these guitars. and WHY THESE THREE GUITARS AND NOT THE OTHERS ?
any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had bad ground loop problems with EMG's (SA's). It's aggravating for sure.
I'd just chalk it up to different electrical components in the guitar causing the loops to pick up different frequencies - I'm thinking somewhat similar to the effect of a tuner know on a radio.
IMO, its best to work on eliminating the ground loops. Use the cheater plug suggestion I mentioned at your own risk - I know enough about tube amps to be dangerous, so ask an expert. ;-)
Use a Pedal Power, if you have a rack, use humfrees/shelf washers, modify your signal cables first. I've read it is possible even in a complex system to eliminate ground loops without going to cheater plugs, just never had to go that far.

Would the HumX help reduce hum from dimmer switches (We're talking LOUD hum here) with my (Duncan vintage Soapbar) Les Paul Special? Even an ElectroHarmonix HumDeBugger can't eliminate enough hum! Funny, but the EHX Hum DeBugger does an adequate job with my Teles and Rickenbacker, but with P-90s, forget it. I think it's all those dimmers. Anyone?

^^^ I don't think it helps with that - Sounds like you might benefit from shielding your guitar.
Also make sure you eliminate all ground loops from your chain. I can play a Tele in my usual area with no additional help other than the shielding from the factory with gain - Noise level is fairly low. I'm using Tele/Strat into Bogner Blue. Diamond Compressor@18V, Choralflange, and El Capistan, Powered with a Pedal Power II

Also take a good look at your dimmers. Some brands and styles are noisier than others.
