Humbucker Covers...

My buddy and I are re-finishing a cheap little starter guitar (Starcaster) I have, and one thing I will need to do after the finish is...well, finished...I need new covers for the pickups (currently white).

The guitar has an HSS setup, and I'll need to get a cover for the white humbucker. Looking online, *ALL* of the humbucker covers I see have the one line of holes for the magnets, while the actual humbucker I have has two; essentially two singles wrapped together.

All that said, my question is: does it matter if I get a cover with only one set of holes? Or is that going to affect the sound/tonality?

I appreciate the advice! :eyecrazy:

Re: Humbucker Covers...

Do you have a pic? It matters whether the "magnets" you mentioned are screws or slugs, and if they are magnets, how far they stick up.

Also, Fender/Squier humbucker pickguard routs have rounded corners, so they don't allow for covered humbuckers (without modification).

It's two rows of slugs. You can put a standard humbucker cover on it, or one that has no holes at all. There are covers that have 12 holes as well. I have seen them, but I don't remember where.

You need to measure the pole spacing of the pickup. It will be metric, most likely 53 or 50 millimeters (different sizes than 52.4 mm and 49.2 mm, so don't order those sizes). Measure from/to the centers of the E string poles.

You will also need to square off the corners of that humbucker hole in the pickguard a bit.

Before you do all that, take a look at what an HSS Strat with a covered humbucker looks like. It may look better if you just leave the pickup uncovered. I covered the pickup on my HSS Strat, and after about a year of that look, I really haven't learned to love it. I think it'd look better without the cover.
