Re: Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

I have a really wimpy sounding, hss guitar, that I want to thicken up.Anybody have a suggestion, and please don't tell me to change the hardware because I already have that in the works. The huimbucker that is really wimpy is a Dimarzio Super D!

Great suggestions by all, but I want to know what amp you're using to have come to that conclusion that the Super Distortion is wimpy.

Re: Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

Please help. My 7 liter Z06 engine has no balls.

Seriously, there's lots of valid reasons for using (or not using) the Super Distortion, but it being 'wimpy' is not one of them.

Re: Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

Y'all have the wrong idea. I'm only saying it sounds wimpy in my guitar, not that it is normally wimpy. I have considered the possibility that the pickup is in Parallel but I haven't really checked it out yet. I think the guitar is the problem, anyway. It is super cheap and the hardware and wiring all suck. It is made of alder, as well. I didn't notice how bad it sounded until I bought my Les Paul and I was blown away. I don't know, I just want some help on this guitar. The next time I restring it, I think I'll check out the wiring on the pickup.

I have an Oscar Schmidt Delta King (paid $150 back in '03) that my ex-bandmate had put the Super Distortion in there, and whether through a PA, ss combo or a Fender Twin, that guitar rawked like no other.

You still haven't answered my first question, even though some of the guys have suspected that it was wired in parallel before you did.

Re: Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

Its gotta be either wired parallell, or one coil is not going. There is nothing wimpy about a SUper D.

I'm using a Vox Valvetronix, not the plus series. It is possible that the bridge is robbing the sustain....

Check the wiring. If it looks good, try the Super D in the Les Paul. Maybe just wait til you get the hardware and wiring upgraded and see what it's like after that. I had a beat up squire a long time ago that I tried a Duncan Custom in and it was pretty awesome sounding. I think new, those squires go for $75.

Re: Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

I have made some guesses. I took off the pickguard and I turned the pickup right side up (so the label was up, I know it doesn't do anything). I wasn't able to get online to check the wiring though. After putting the guitar back together, I plugged it in. I noticed that there was a slight increase in output, but it sounded thinner and more single coily. It may be parallel or only one coil is working. My high e string sounded horribly thin. It sounded kinda like the earlier part of the video below except thinner and less sustain and worse tone. I am 95% sure that the bridge is screwing up the sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMggCYHN390

The wiring is simple for dimarzios it is red to hot,black/white get twisted together and taped back, green and bare are grounds and go to the top of the pot.
from the description my guess is you are hearing a DSD wired up wrong.
it has 425mv of output which is more than a tone zone or duncan jb or distortion. so wimpy the dsd is not

Re: Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

If he's a troll, this is a weird f-ing troll. I'm pretty sure he's wired his pickup in wrong. I did the same with a D-Sonic once. But instead of complaining on a forum I rewired it and it was solved in what seems like could have been 3 times by now.

Re: Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

Try Ernie Ball Cobalt string, with my Ibanez with C8 pup cobalt's were way to bright. went back to Nickel Regular Slinky everything is all good now.
