Re: humbucker for strat-like

I LOVE an Invader in a Strat. With a switch to go from series to parallel. Two killer sounds.

Re: humbucker for strat-like

You want a pup to split well and have Strat-like tones. The answer is obvious...Stagmag.

Re: humbucker for strat-like

someboby said PG in neck is great and in bridge is suck
waht about SH11?

The CC is very fat and has little treble. But it would match the PG in the neck well if that is what you are looking for.

The PG bridge is about the best PAF for a tremolo guitar because it has some extra low frequency boost without being un-PAFy like the CC.

Re: humbucker for strat-like

Again noone asks so I will, what value pots are in the guitar ?
This has a bearing on your choice.

No one has asked because at this point it is not relevant. And you don't choose a pup to match the pot anyway. The pot shouldn't have "a bearing on your choice" of pickups...your choice of pups may have a bearing on you choice of pots. When he installs his new pup, he MAY have to do some tweaking with the pot, but maybe not.

I unfortunately can't speak to how they sound split, but I have used the Invader, Distortion, and JB (with A5 or A2 magnet swap) in a couple of strats and like them all. To my ears, the Invader and Distortion have surprisingly clear and articulate cleans and can get as crunchy/distorted as you want them to get.

I was thinking along those lines - normally the pickup choice comes first, then I may adapt the pot value. Unless, I am dead set on one pickup position (say bridge) and my correspondingly chosen pot value(s) and looking for a (say neck) pickup to match that environment.

If the OP looks to match a bridge pickup to his single coils and (supposedly) a 250k pot, then 59/Custom hybrid should work well.

Re: humbucker for strat-like

Stagmag
Humbucker from Hell
EJ Custom
Bluesbucker

Only played the Bluesbucker of them, and only in the neck. In the bridge it may be too bright. If the OP goes with the Bluesbucker the screw coil should be facing the neck, not the bridge, as it is the active coil.

Re: humbucker for strat-like

What a load of typical forum Tosh....
of course the pots are relevant.
If you recommend a humbucker which only shines with 500k pots, it'll sound like **** if the guitar has 250k pots.
Likewise, he listens to you, chooses to change pots to suit your recommendation of humbucker and discovers that his single coils are now way too shrill.

So...tell him that if he takes your advice and finds out I was right, you'll pay for him to correct your mistake out of your own pockets...see how confident you are now.

A PG will fit Strat pots nicely and is a good all round choice. ( for those with deep pockets the 78 is a tweaked PG to my ears )
For rock, a JB is a great choice.
For something in between, the Demon is good.

Personally I didn't like the Hybrid, so I wouldn't recommend it

The pots don't make that much difference. Gibson was running 300 Kohm pots for decades.

If that were true, manufacturers wouldn't use / recommend different values and we all know that Gibson is a Mecca for great quality control.. NOT !!!

To the OP, There you go, you can follow their advice because they'll all chip together and pay to sort your guitar if you end up with ;
a.. a muddy humbucker
b.. single coils that sound like nails on a chalk board

Failing that, open up the guitar and take a look so you can get a proper recommendation.

So, how often did you a/b compare 500 and 250 kohm pots with the same pickups?

Went through the experience in the last 2 weeks as a matter of fact and was stunned by the findings.

Re: humbucker for strat-like

Pots do make a difference, sometimes more, sometimes less.

However, if you have a 500k pot which suits the humbucker you can add a resistor (470k or 510k) to ground to make the single coils "see" a load of close to 250k. No big deal.
