Humbucker for Strat?

I am thinking about putting a humbucker in my strat but i don't know which. My strat has an ash body rosewood fretboard and maple neck. I play mostly classic rock with some heavier stuff like mettalica. I want a good humbucker that could get these tones in my strat but also have a nice clean tone and sound nice split. Also i need a humbucker that will sound good with 250k POTS. The tone wizard reccomends me the 59 or custom 5. Anybody have any experience with these humbuckers in a similair strat? Other than those two I was also considering the 78. What do u guys reccomend for a low output humbucker with 250k POTS in my strat.

Re: Humbucker for Strat?

I personally can't stand the C5 in a strat. The 59 would be god. That or a JB will sound very good with a 250k pot. The JB splits very well also. If you want more VHish types of tones then I would say the CC would be a good choice.

Re: Humbucker for Strat?

C5=my favorite Duncan bucker, especially if you want a good clean sound!!!!

Re: Humbucker for Strat?

Custom Custom. Lots of mids (maybe too much for some other guitars) and good raw punch for classic and hard rock. I like the C5 and the Custom too, but the CC would be my first choice for a strat. 59 is nice for classic rock with more of a bright edge.

Re: Humbucker for Strat?

Right now its between the 59 and the pearly gates. Has anybody actually Tried a 59 in the Bridge of a strat similar to mine and was it good for classic and heavy Rock?

Re: Humbucker for Strat?

If you have the right amp, you can get a PAF style pickup (which both the 59 and the PG would be) so do screaming metal. I use a PG in the bridge of my Les Paul with my TriAmp and I play metal and hard rock most of the time with my band. Works great.

Re: Humbucker for Strat?

A '59 sounds good in a Strat but I like a little more "Juice" which is where the C5 shines.

Re: Humbucker for Strat?

Right off the bat I'd recommend something with an A2 magnet in an Ash Strat especially with the Metallica name drop being there. The reason I say that is because it's a warmer magnet where as Ash is pretty bright. A CC could be nice but I don't know how it sounds with a 250k pot. So maybe a C5 would be good to keep things clear with that 250k pot.

Re: Humbucker for Strat?

Seems like i'm going to go with my original choice the C5, but if i find that its too high output i will probably try the 59. Would i be able to return the C5 after putting it in my guitar if i don't like it?

If you buy it from a SD dealer you should be able to return within 21 days, IIRC.

What kind of amp do you use?

You can try the C5. If it's too hot, go with the '59b or the PG+. If you find them too "weak" for metallica stuff try a A8 magnet in either one.

Re: Humbucker for Strat?

Hope the C5 sounds good but agree with the recommendation of the PG, PG+ or '59. Have you considered using a stacked pot for the single coils and 500k pot for the humbucker? Wondering if a 500k push-pull pot with a resistor would give you the choice of either a 250k or 500k pot for the humbucker?

No i never thought about that but it could be a possibility. The only thing is i'm new to all this stuff and i'm probably going to mess up my guitar by just putting the humbucker in and this seems a lot more complicated so i think i will stick with the 250k pots for now.

Re: Humbucker for Strat?

No way! I had no clue when I rewired my LP. Wasn't even sure which end of a soldering iron to use but somehow it worked out well. Second project was to piece together a HB pre-routed tele body with reverse headstock ziricote Strat neck which I gave to my son and no amount of bribery (gave him my Casino Revolution for his 20th b-day, rewired his MIM Strat with Am pups, etc) has worked. He's eyeing my Marshal Plexi and the best I can do is play the Tele periodically. The moral of the story…if you first don't succeed…rewire the axe and hope you don't blow-up the basement…but sometimes mistakes make the best guitars (see the Peter Green LP that his tech wired wrong and the rest is history…iconic sound).

Re: Humbucker for Strat?

I was just wondering since i have a rosewood fretboard does that make it brighter or warmer rather than a maple fretboard.

Re: Humbucker for Strat?

Rosewood necks are warmer than maple necks which gives a little bit duller attack, which in my opinion is not a bad thing :)
