Humbucker height and minor pickguard problems

Hey guys.
I was wondering what the general humbucker height was for strats, or what most of you use. The humbucker in question is an EVH '78. Here is the problem. I just got a HSS pickguard from Warmoth, and when the last fret is depressed, the highest the humbucker can reach is roughly a little more than 1/8'' from the bottom of the string to the top of the polepiece. The reason for this is because the way the wire is wrapped around the humbucker. It get's farther out towards the bottom, so If I needed it closer to the strings, I would have to shave away some of the material from the top and bottom of the humbucker hole. Otherwise it would get hung up on the pickguard from underneath. The problem with this is that there is only so much material left before the screw hole, and I did'nt want to weaken the area, or make it all ugly and open. So I wanted to see what the general suggested height is, before I go hacking away at the humbucker hole.

Second thing is about the single coil holes. They are a little bigger than the pickup, so there will be a little play from side to side. I was wondering if anyone else has come across this, and how you got rid of some of the play, so the pickup does'nt shake around or feel sloppy. There's is'nt a whole lot of space on either side, but definately more than when they come stock from Fender.

Thanks!

Try some thicker covers for the singles :)

And oh, i have my humbuckers from half an inch to a whole inch from my strings. I think it makes my sound a little "softer" and warmer. The point is, it's just adjusting the pups until it sounds good.

IMO this is a case of function before form... Adjust the humbucker so that it sounds best, if this requires a modification of the guard or even a new guard then so be it.

Single coils: I´ve seen it often, it seems that manufacturers prefer to have a bit of "air" in the PG rout to accomodate for the minimal variances in SC size... A thicker cover may be a solution, but generally speaking the air gap won´t cause problems (should be .5mm or less all around). Silicone tubing instead of springs will help a little in removing any play....

Thanks guys!
Yeah I have the tubing instead of springs for the single coil screws. Generally, does higher pickup height result in brighter or warmer tone?
