I agree, that terminology never made sense to me; if you hold a guitar, is "front" the pickup close to the left side of your body or the right? Almost as bad as remembering which position corresponds to 1 through 5 on a Strat.
Rhythm / Treble are also somewhat ambiguous as it both assumes what tones you want and that your pup voicing doesn't negate the physics of the position. Bridge / Neck make a heck of a lot of sense to me. Or Flashy / Reserved

I always thought it was because looking at the contacts of the switch you read it from 1 to 3 going from top to bottom and that continued onto Strats, which is why neck is 5 and bridge is 1.
