humbucker in lp for grunge

right now i have a paf pro in the bridge of my lp and im getting rid of it because its the wrong spacing since i have an epi. So, i thought id try something new. I want to get that big smashing pumpkins sound from mellon collie and the infinite sadness and machina. I want a big bottom end with focused mids and a smooth top end, and note definition and clarity, richness and harmonics. Id prefer to stay away from a ceramic magnet because i had the custom before and found it to shrill and weird sounding. I was thinking about going with a 59 but dont know if it will hold the bottom end. See, i dont really need a high output humbucker because im using a dod grunge distortion pedal for my distortion. (i know a lot of people may bash that pedal, but i love it ... its cheap, durable and actually has really good clarity for a high gain pedal.

Anyways, i dont think i could be anymore specific with what im looking for...basically a low to medium output humbucker with the qualities mention above. So, let me know you think would work.

Re: humbucker in lp for grunge

I played for years using nothing but a Grunge into a clean amp.

Now I have a Rectifier, and I still use my Grunge. Nothing sounds quite like it, and I love how dirty and nasty it can sound.

Personally, I've had good results using a DiMarzio Super Distortion and a Duncan JB for grunge type playing, and both pickups have been used by notable grunge bands (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden (I think Soundgarden used JB's, but I could be wrong)

Corgan uses so many different guitars, it's hard to pin his sound down, but he does have a preference for Stratocasters, so looking into single coils or really low output humbuckers would probably be a good start. When playing Pumpkins stuff, I usually stay on my neck singles.

Maybe something like a Jazz for the cleans and a 59b for the bridge?

Or buy a S/S/S Strat.

Yeah, dumb name, but it does what it does well. I suspect that if it was called by a different name, people wouldn't dismiss it so quickly.
