Humbucker Magnets - Two Side-by-side?

G&L does this on Doheny V12 and F100 humbuckers; rather than use a single magnet bridging the pole pieces a single ‘North’ magnet is used, placed next to the ‘South’ magnet (one magnet under each coil.) I assume there’s a reason for this- would this configuration change anything functional vs. the typical PAF one magnet?

Not sure, but interesting to discuss.
I know the P90's use 2 magnets with the pole pieces in between

Maybe on the bucker it's a way to 'voice' each coil.
Wonder how the 3rd Power MagFrag compares..

Re: Humbucker Magnets - Two Side-by-side?

Leo Fender used separate ceramic bar magnets under each set of polls for his MFD pickups. Then there’s a steel plate bridging the bottom of the magnets to complete the magnetic circuit and boost the inductance.

It’s not that different from his MusicMan bass pickups with alnico rod magnets in each bobbin.

It doesn’t matter how you do it, as long as you have one coil South and the other North.

Another unusual aspect of both F100 and Doheny MFD humbuckers is, there was also an apparent effort to keep the magnets from touching each other; the plastic cover separates them, so they are only joined by the baseplate.

I’ve been wanting to experiment with some ceramic spacer magnets I have. I’m wondering what having spacer/flank magnets on each side rather than a full sized magnet in the middle will do.

Yeah, but they are glued to the baseplate. I think it’s just the way they made the covers. MusicMan bass pickups also have that wall between the two bobbins. I think it’s more about keeping the bobbins in place.

The difference with the flanking magnets, and humbuckers in general is the poles poke out the bottom of the bobbins and the magnets touch the sides of the poles.

With the MFD pickups the bottom of the poles are flush with the bobbin, and the magnet sits on the bottom. Lots of cheap pickups are made that way.

Both ways magnetize the poles.
