Humbucker or Trembucker in hardtail Strat bridge position?

Re: Humbucker or Trembucker in hardtail Strat bridge position?

Gregory, thanks for setting me straight on the 250k/500k issue. Lewguitar and Saladin, I like your idea of adding a tone pot for the bridge HB only. Should that pot (for the bridge humbucker only) be a 500k? I had hoped to keep my Strat stripped down to one pot only, but that was back in the day when it sported its original three single-coils. I have both 250k and 500k spares in the parts box . . . maybe I'll give up and add a tone pot for the HB.

For me a tone pot for the bridge pickup is a must. Almost every bridge pickup I've ever owned sounded better to me (at least at times) with a little of the treble rolled off by the guitar's tone pot.

Very helpful for getting Eric Johnson style violin tones or Clapton's Cream tones for example.

I don't usually use or need a tone pot for the neck pickup.

So I'd go for a 500K tone pot for the bridge humbucker only.

Re: Humbucker or Trembucker in hardtail Strat bridge position?

A magnet swap is physically partially disassembling a pickup, sliding a magnet out, and sliding one back in. It isn't difficult, but it is harder than pouring a glass of water. There are numerous threads here about it, as well as tons of videos out there. The dangers are breaking the coil (very very bad) or disconnecting one of the output wires accidentally.

A Custom and a 500k tone pot are a perfect match!

Yes, a Duncan Custom can be shrill with its ceramic magnet. Just google this forum for mag swap.
Another thought. Whem i was in the same situation like you with a DiMarzio pickup, i found that a cap from hot to gound with the pickup can taylor the highs nicely. i tried tiny caps starting round 100 pF = .1 nF = .0001 uF worked great, but can go higher up to 10 nF = .01 uF .You can buy bags of caps on Fleabay like this for cheap money:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/30-Values-3...479336&hash=item338acce213:g:zswAAMXQfvlShOco

I would start with 4 nF for a warm sound connecting with croco clamps from the first lug of the volume pot to the ground. You can lead the hookup wire out under the scratchplate and test a bunch of caps until you find your match. There is need to drill another pot hole, you don't use while playing.

I don't think you want to be recommending putting a .1n cap in series with your pickup!

I installed TB-4 instead of SH-4 but the rods still don't fit the strings. :smack: Decided better wider than more narrow. :bigthumb:

I too tend to go for Wider than Narrower... I am not sure I am still missing something with Wider

Oh, my bad. Narrower, of course. :smack:

I also saw TB-4 on Jake E. Lee's pickguard made by 920D.
