Humbucker Pickup ID request (Peavey Wolfgang?)

I came across this pickup on ebay and ended up winning it for nearly nothing. Seller says it was in his dads parts box and the DC Resistance was 10.1k. Doesn't know anything else about it. I've been looking on the internet and by checking the bobbins and black backplate I'm guessing it's an old Peavey Wolfgang, but all the info out there says that they measure around 14k. Any idea of what this is?

B2D, I saw that post while I was digging for info. I also saw different posts on other forums saying that the neck pickups on the Peaveys were wound hotter and/or had higher DC resistance than the bridge pickups as per EVH's orders. Reminds me of the EVH Wolfgangs and the three way pickup selector working backwards.

Would a weakened magnet have a lowered DC Resistance? I wouldn't think that a pickup from the mid 90s would have weakened that much.

Just make sure you're reading the pickup in full-output mode and not split or tapped, etc.

Also the mid-90s if we're talking 1995 was 20 years ago, who knows what's happened to it since then.

You sure? Every time I've done a magnet swap (A5 to A8 for example) the DCR went up. Not by a whole lot, but it did go up.

Really? I always thought resistance was the wire and that's it.

Re: Humbucker Pickup ID request (Peavey Wolfgang?)

I've never heard of magnet affecting DCR, but I know temperature does. Do you know if your pickup was the same temp before and after? Perhaps the handling of it warmed it up a bit causing the DCR change you measured?

That's because the TEMPERATURE of the p'up went up. A coil without a magnet will have a DC reading has well.

HTH,

Re: Humbucker Pickup ID request (Peavey Wolfgang?)

The seller is the one that checked the DC resistance. I haven't got the pickup in the mail yet. I'm going to pick up a cheap multimeter to test it and some other pickups I have.

I've swapped pickups before, but I never got into the nuts and bolts of pickup building. Now I'm trying to figure out how the different aspects of the pickups affect the tone and what it all means. DC resistance, resonant peak, type of wire it's wound with, magnet types, etc. I want to read some more before I end up making another thread and asking questions that have been answered hundreds of times. :bigthumb:

Re: Humbucker Pickup ID request (Peavey Wolfgang?)

It sure looks like a pickup out of a Peavey Wolfgang to me. 10K sounds way off, though. Bridge should be around 14K and neck around 16K.

My Wolfgang is one of my few guitars that still have stock pickups, although sometimes I wanna put a push-pull on the neck to flip it to parallel.
