Humbucker-Sized P90's

Thinking about a Phat Cat or a Gibby p94 for my SG. I was wondering how these sound teamed with a vintage humbucker in the other spot. And if I'm looking for sparkling, glassy cleans for funk and blues, would you put a bucker-sized p90 in the bridge or neck?

Re: Humbucker-Sized P90's

i use a phat cat bridge with a pearly gates neck in a sg like washburn, its a cool combo. i use the middle position for most of the cleans and it sounds great, very clear and clean

WOw, I have a PGn somewhere in my house. I remember people advising to stay away from that pup in an SG. But if you're digging it, maybe it's worth a shot. Have you heard a Gibson P94? I heard they are more "P90-ish" than a Phat Cat.

Re: Humbucker-Sized P90's

I too paired a PGn with a Phat Cat in the bridge of my Lester. It's a very cool combo. The P94's aren't bad, but they were a bit too boxy sounding for my tastes. Plus, I think that they're butt-ugly.

Go for the PC's. ;)

Re: Humbucker-Sized P90's

i paired a Seth neck with a Phat Cat bridge......indeed it was a good sounding combo. the middle position was just a little more hollow sounding than your typical 2 humbucker middle position sound. great clean tone. and i've never tried the Gibson pickup, but the Phat Cat sounds great. I could nail the live Pete Townshend sounds playing through my Twin Reverb very loud. the thing that impresses me about the Phat Cat so much was the incredible clarity it had overall, as compared to other bridge humbuckers i had tried in the same guitar

Re: Humbucker-Sized P90's

How does the Phat Cat bridge sound under gain? I'm not looking for a Death Metal tone, but I would still like it to kick some ass for Zep, ZZ, AC/DC et al.

Re: Humbucker-Sized P90's

The PC under gain goes from REM jangle all the way to STP style roar. It's great for ZZ Top and AC/DC tones too.

It all depends on your amp, really.

I think that is the PGb you are thinking of. The neck version sounds great in my SG.

Re: Humbucker-Sized P90's

Have you looked into the Vintage Vibe humbucker sized P90's yet?. Pete Biltoft will work with you until you get what you have in mind, for very cheap.

Just a thought though.

Re: Humbucker-Sized P90's

I'm putting a Phat Cat in the neck (I hope it arrives today!). I've never been that inspired with HB neck pups so I thought I'd give it a try. BTW BachtoRock has 2 axes with Phat's in the neck.

Re: Humbucker-Sized P90's

Not to go off thread but I notuced SoCal Steve's Epi Elitist LP in his avatar. I just snagged one (A Plus model) that was a "blem" on MF for $675. I am anxiously awaiting it's arrival later this week and it is the reason why I decided to swing a P90 bucker in my SG. The LP is going to handle most of the balls to the wall rock and blues while I experiement with the SG.

Re: Humbucker-Sized P90's

How is the Phat Cat with upper midrange "snarl"?

I'm trying to avoid that sound, although I like the attack presented by some (nto all) guitars with P90s I tried in a store.

I see that it's loaded with an A2 magnet, so I assume that any potentially "offensive" frequencies aren't very present? The way that a P-90 responds to pick attack is incredible.....yes, I'm a late bloomer. But I'm concerned about harsh frequencies.

Re: Humbucker-Sized P90's

Is it cutting?

Yes. It cuts as well as most P-90's and better than most 'buckers.

Is it harsh?

That depends on your guitar, but in my Sheraton and my LP, it hasn't been. I think that the alnico II mag and the metal cover round out the offensive frequencies while still keeping much of the traditional P-90 tone.

Straight P-90 bridge, and white paint... And then you "might" have a winner.
