Humbucker sized singlecoil for the neck?

Possibly a slightly odd request, but I have a hum-hum guitar that i am thinking about new pickups for. I have a guitar that is hum-single and i love the sounds i get from it, full rock sounds from the bridge, and nice clean singlecoil sounds from the neck, plus there is a fair difference in output between the two, so between the different characters and outputs i can jump dirty->clean with my amp which I love - not being stuck to pedals and no faffing about with volume knobs (i can never get it to the same point each time)

So, is there anything for me? the stag mag looks promising, possibly left tapped permanently. but are there any other options? I did notice the stag mag only seems to be available as a bridge unit...

probably matching with a custom/custom custom/distortion in the bridge of the guitar, still undecided there too

The Phat Cat Neck pickup would balance out great with the Custom Custom in the Bridge...

The custom shop has "Sound of Strat® under humbucker cover (“G” spacing) $140." There is a picture of it on the CS page. I think allparts also has a cover that you can put a single coil in.

If it were me, I'd go with a splittable humbucker with either a DPDT mini toggle or a push/pull switch. That way should you ever find that you want the humbucker tone, it's a flip of the switch. With a PP switch I'd simply wire it so the "down" (normal) position was split.

All of these are good ideas. I'd probably go with the Phat Cat, myself. That would make for a sweet (and rather unique) combo.

Yep...the Phat Cat. That's the best choice right there. Nothing better, IMO.

If you wanted to go with a humbucker and split it, I do like the tone of the JB split. Great single coil tone. You could also connect its coils in parallel and get a single coil tone that would still be humbucking.

Kind of makes me want to try a single coil in the neck of my LP :chairfall

Re: Humbucker sized singlecoil for the neck?

A phat cat would be cool, I have no real experience with p90's though, so i don't know how well it does the singlecoil job or how it would sound.
The sounds I am going against are a standard japanese strat neck singlecoil against a jb humbucker in another of my guitars, which sounds awesome and is pretty versatile (though i am unsure on the jb)

the other thing is that the phat cat only comes with nickel or gold covers, and its a black superstrat i am putting it in, may look a bit odd, i need to go play with kisaeke and see what it would look like

i will have a look at that custom shop one too

Re: Humbucker sized singlecoil for the neck?

checked out the custom shop one, and it dosent say anything other than the price... plus if i can i would rather just buy a normal one, rather than paying extra and waiting for a custom one

so i guess it is between a phat cat and stag mag

for the stag mag, i dont have any space for switches, but i could use a push pull to choose, but i would have to work out what i used most first of all (to set that to the 'in' position, I am only really intending using it as a singlecoil though, but who knows
