humbucker Tele bridge Questions?

I love the Gotoh Modern Tele Bridge with a slot for a humbucker except one thing... I find the Humbucker slot is too close to the saddles in turn making it a bright sounding axe... Does anyone know of other modern Tele bridges i can use that place the humbucker farther away from the Saddles for a more mellow tone? I guess a slightly longer bridge....

Re: humbucker Tele bridge Questions?

If you move it any farther away, you'll be into the pickguard area.

You could try a pickup that isn't as bright. Or if you're using 500K pots, try 300K or 250K pots.

Ya maybe it will be into the pickguard area....

changing pots and stuff does not do it for me... i'm real picky about where the bridge humbucker is placed.... it's about 3 1/6's or 2/8th's farther away from the saddles then the Gotoh bridge allows... that small amount makes a big difference! Guess i can try a hardtail strat bridge and use a Pickup ring... custom made to cover up the original tele PU rout

What humbuckers have you tried in the Gotoh bridge that're too bright?

When I had USACG make a mahogany humbucker Tele body, I had them drill it for a Hipshot hardtail Strat bridge. I picked the Hipshot because the strings are slightly closer together than the normal hardtail bridge. A little more like Tele spacing.

That guitar is a lot darker sounding than the ones I used the Gotoh humbucker bridge on. But there're always so many variables, that I don't really know if the bridge was what made the difference. But it's a lot more like a Les Paul with the hardtail bridge. Minus the Les Paul style sustain and note decay of course.

The one Tele that I put the Gotoh HB on, used to have a cutoff flatplate Tele bridge, and it did get a lot brighter when I switched to the Gotoh bridge. But I was also switching from a Super Distortion do a Duncan '59, and from 250K pots to 500K pots. But the pickup was in approx the same location.

There're just so many variables, and I don't take a scientific enough approach. I tend to change too many things at once.

A regular hardtail, a humbucker frame and a slightly cut pickguard:

Re: humbucker Tele bridge Questions?

In my opinion, if the pickup isn't mounted in the bridge, it ain't a Tele.

How 'bout emphasizing the coil further from the bridge? Maybe even mount it backwards, with the screw coil toward the neck.

With the variety of pickups out there these days, I would think you'd find one that works in the Gotoh. For me, it's a Duncan Custom.

Believe me: no Gotoh bridges. My recipe is:

STOP, CHOP and ...ROLL!!! :D

And it's bright, but it's a p.a.f. brightness. Fat and bright.

PU placement is so important... In my strats i have had some WD pickguards with the slot too far back towards the bridge i hated the tone... I did some measurements and the WD pickguard's humbucker slot was about 3/16th's farther back then an American Standard HSS Pickguard... I also found that the WD Guard had the slot right were Gotoh's Tele bridge holds the Humbucker going by my measurements from the 21st fret crown.. Moving the PU that little 3/16th's closer to the neck makes the lows sound deeper and the mids more pronounced..

Take a look at the Charvel 1978 reissues out a few years ago... Their humbuckers are close to the bridge... and when you add a Floyd like EVH did to his Black and Yellow VHII era Charvel the Floyd was touching the Pickup almost... later on Charvel with Floyd models moved the PU farther away from the bridge to give the Floyd bridge more space.... and that humbucker placement is the Sweet spot...

so on a tele i would wish i could get a bridge that mounts the Humbucker in the same place Fender now mounts their bridge buckers in the American Series Strats...

until then i prefer a Tele bridge meant for Tele PU's.. i may have to do some custom work to get what i want
