Humbucker that sounds like a high-output single coil pickup?

Hey all,

I have a Squier Jazzmaster that's more or less used as a backup guitar for touring. It has a really dark Epiphone pup in the bridge position, and I don't like it at all. I really, really like the SSL-5 pickup in the bridge position when I had a Strat, so I'm looking for a humbucker that sounds like the SSL-5 in the bridge position -- a high-output single coil pup with a lot of clarity and great sustain.

I was thinking about putting in a mini-humbucker in the bridge position, but they're still a little too dark and 'muddy' for me (I have a 2018 Gibson SG special with mini-humbuckers and it has a lot of grit, but it's too muddy when playing lead parts).

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I don't think you'll find humbucker that sounds like an SSL-5. It sounds like you just want a brighter humbucker so I'll recommend a Jazz Bridge or Screamin Demon.

An ssl-5 is pretty similar to a p90. Maybe try a p90 (or humbucker sized p90) in the bridge.

You might be able to get a custom cut pickguard with a strat sized bridge position. I know the custom shop also has single coils under humbucker covers so you might be able to get a SSL-5 under a Jazzmaster cover? Or are the poles on a Jazzmaster and strat the same spacing because you could just put a SSL-5 under the Jazzmasters cover?

I am not someone who thinks that there is any pickup other than an SSL-5/6 is the right one here. If you really want a humbucker, maybe the Custom Shop can build something for you.

Not even the STK-S6 Custom Stack Plus?

Whatever the G&L version of the Fender J8 Jazz pickup is excellent for what you are asking.
