HUMBUCKER WIRING VARIATIONS ON ARTIE'S COIL SWAP MOD

I have been experimenting with variations of Artie's coil swap mod with coil cut for some time.

I recently discovered that if you wire the coil cut only to ground out the neck ( or bridge ) pup you can ,because of how the coil swap works still get all the 9 combinations plus 2 additional settings.

Bridge pup plus split neck
Bridge split plus bridge slug with neck coil

If you wire to cut the bridge the additionals will obviously change.

One of those rare occasions where you get more by doing less. The position of the coil swap DTDP is of course more critical for the coil cut options than Artie's original schematic.

I actually used a very cheap mini on off switch to do the coil cut. If you replace this with a mini DPDT on-on-on you can get 4 more settings

Neck pup in parallel
Bridge plus neck in parallel
Bridge coil in parallel with neck slug
Bridge coil in parallel with neck slug plus bridge slug in series with neck coil

I recently used this idea on a project I helped with and also wired up the remaining push pull to enable pick up combinations to be put in series out of phase. This gave another 6 settings plus a kill switch setting which comes as a bonus although it can only really be usefully used with the series OOPs option engaged. That gave 21 options (22 if you count the KS) from 2 push pulls and a mini switch..

The guitar owner was very very happy with the end result. He wanted a complex Jimmy Page type wiring to play with but did not want to cover his 2 pot guitar with lots of mini switches. He has posted some pics of the wiring on another forum.

Geez, and I was impressed by what Artie came up with. Nice work. Great to see people getting creative.

Thanks for your kind comment Blueman 335 although I can hardly be compared with a master wiring guru like Artie. Plus at 70 (this month) my hands are not as steady as they were and my soldering is not as easy as I used to find it.

FWIW I mischievously slipped in a small over statement to see if anybody would pick it up. With a simple on off coil cut of the neck slug only you can only get the bridge screw coil and neck screw coil separately . Not both together. So you are actually one option short of Artie's 9. You do of course get this setting with the DTDP on on on mini switch because the neck screw coil is still grounded in the coil cut position whatever position the coil swap is in. The 2 screw coils actually sounded rather good together in series and OOPs.

FWIW 2 The owner reports that the “kill switch” is proving useful and more easier to use than expected. When using the bridge pup you pull up the series OOPs push pull or if in series OOPs mode you flick the selector switch to the bridge position.

I am not a master wiring guru. I'm a drunk with a really cool soldering iron. :)

But, I'm intrigued by your post, but I didn't see a diagram in your link. I'd love to see it. Am I missing something?

I used to have a good soldering iron skills but the effects of age and Jim Beam and coke (the drinkable kind) have slowly taken their toll. Am grateful for your interest Artie . Am sure you missed nothing. Will try and scribble out some thing readable and post schematic we used in next 24 hours.

Artie..pretty sure this is how I wired it. Hope its clear enough .. One of the many things I do badly is sketch. For simplicity, the common grounds and volume and tone wiring are omitted.

As I initially posted, the basic idea started with coil cutting just one pup and then using the coil swap to get the coil cut on the other pup plus a few bonus settings.

The kill switch/dead spot option is obviously when the oops/series Push Pull is up and the pick up selector is in the bridge position.

Am assuming that no comment from Artie is negative inference of approval.
