Humbucker with abit less compression...

I've used the JB for years and its done me well but i really want a A5 bridge pickup that sounds alot less compressed, some life in the dynamics and abit of punch would be great.
I tried the 59b for a while but found it a little too shrill and thin sounding.
Thinking of a Dimarzio virtual PAF, what else is about in pickup land?

It's going in the bridge position of my ep lp custom, into a twin reverb usually with a nice fuzz adding some crunch.

A screamin demon or custom 5 would be a good choice. The demon is a very open and airy sounding pickup that will keep you in low output territory. It could stand to be a little thicker but overall I like it a lot. It is great for distortion. The custom 5 is a higher output '59. So it has a little more compression due to its higher output, but has less than the JB IMO. The custom 5 is bright but certainly not thin sounding at all.

Re: Humbucker with abit less compression...

I had to sound off and say this is reminds me of the relationship between my Distortion (~ a JB w/ ceramic mag instead of A5 mag) and my Custom (Custom 5 w/ ceramic mag instead of A5 mag) - compression included.

I can roll my Custom up to the bottom range of my Distortion or roll my Distortion down to the top range of my Custom.

I'd bet the Custom 5 would be 'spot on' the tone you're after!

Sounds like another user that wishes SD made a JB-lite.

Since the JB is a HUGE seller, if this pickup were designed and put on the market, it would be a huge seller also IMO becasue of the name itself.

Re: Humbucker with abit less compression...

To be honest a JB-Lite would be ideal.
I tried the Custom 5 quickly a while ago and remember really not liking the bass end, probably because my twin has so much bass anyway but it was less like low bass frequencies and more of a peak in the very low mids?

I ended buying the bareknuckes riff raff on abit of a whim, seems like its what im after, although i was quite tempted to get a Jazz bridge. If this doesn't work out i think i will just phone up the SD Custom shop and see what say about making me a JB-Lite.

What I'd really like to know is, does higher output really equal in more compression and less dynamics?

It sounds like you might like a C5. It is similar to the 59 but with more bottom end and smoother high notes.

Yes, IMO output does effect those things usually.

Let me and us know what the CS says. I may go that route someday too. I am sure quite a number of us on here would be up for that.
