Humbuckers: Direct mount VS Mounting ring

Okay, so I am replacing some pickups in my guitar.

The stock ones were screwed directly to the body...

My Seymours do not fit the stock screws for mounting to the body, and the screws that came with them are not fit for screwing into wood. They did however come with mounting rings.

So what shall I do? Take a drill to the guitar and use the mounting rings? Or somehow convince the pickups to accept the stock screws (is that possible)?

Also I am just curious if you guys have any opinions as to whether there are sonic advantages to either mounting method.

I'd drill out the holes in the ears of the pickups to fit the original screws before I would alter the guitar whatsoever.

Drill the legs. Worked for me in my RGT220A.

Update!!


The holes where the screws go into the body for direct mounting don't quite line up with the ones on my Seymours. So either way I'd have to drill. If I drill new holes for direct mount the holes look like they will just widen the existing holes into a goatse-esque widehole thing... so I guess I'd have to plug the old ones prior.

I am leaning towards just drilling this ***** up and using the mounting rings...

Will the neck mounting ring even fit on there?

Toothpicks and carpenters glue to fill the old holes and then drill for direct mount.
I'm betting you can find a wood screw that is skinny enough to not have to drill out the leg fitting.
If you can find an Ace Hardware, they usually have a wide selection of screws and such.

It's a shame SD doesn't make retrofit baseplates/legs to accommodate both concepts.
Seems like there's something that could be done design-wise.

You can't just bend the legs or clip off some excess metal around the feet?
