Humbuckers for a Semi-Hollowbody

I recently picked up the discontinued Ibanez Talman TM71, which has a semi-hollow maple body and rosewood fretboard. I'd like to change the pickups on it, but would like to get some thoughts from you guys because most of my experience is with strats and teles.

The stock pickups have chrome covers, but I think I have already decided to go with uncovered black and cream zebra coils because it will look nice with the cream binding. I play and look for tones ranging from classic rock (Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Tom Petty) up through 90's rock (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains). The only full-size humbucker that I have much experience with is the JB that I have in the bridge of my G&L Legacy. I think it's higher output than what I am looking for here. I'd like to get a good clean sound from the neck, without being too muddy or boomy. Any clean strumming or picking will probably be done with the neck or middle position. I'd also like that big, fat, open, sustaining lead tone from the neck when overdriven. I'll go to the bridge for distorted rhythm and leads. I want something that crunches well, but is not overly compressed or high output, is good for leads, and balances well with the neck pickup. I hate to use this example, but Billy Joe's tone on Green Day's Dookie would be a good ballpark for the rhythm crunch that I would hope to get.

For the neck, I've been considering a Jazz, Alnico II Pro, or '59. For the bridge, I've been considering a '59, Custom, or Custom Custom. From what I've read, I'm really attracted to the idea of the '59 in the bridge, but I'm not sure if it has quite enough mids or output. I've heard the '59 can get boomy in the neck. The Jazz would be an obvious choice, but I've also read a couple of people recommending the Alnico II Pro because the Jazz doesn't do so well overdriven.

I'm prepared to use the exchange policy and swap around until I get it right, but if I could get it right the first time that would be even better. Any suggestions? Thanks.

i think a pearly gates et would work well for ya.

pgn will do that fine!!

pgb does that too

Pearly Gates would be nice...as Jeremy mentioned. I have the Seth Lover neck and Custom Custom set in my Hamer Monoco semi-hollowbody and I have never heard a better combination of pickups in a semi hollowbody guitar. Lew

Thanks for the replies so far. As a curiosity, how would a Jazz neck work with a '59 bridge?

Beautifully. For a slightly clearer tone, the Jazz N would be nice too.

I have experienced '59s , Seths and Antiquities in my PRS Hollow and I keep the Ants in.
The Seths sounded huge , mainly the bridge which as a little more crisp the the ant , but the ant neck is unbeatable to me.
The '59b was huge too but I found the '59n a bit muddy and buzzy in this axe.

I think I will swap the Ant bridge for a Seth and keep the ant in the neck.

About the PGs , I installed a set in my pal's 335 , the neck is ok but the bridge has too much mids.
After I put Seth Lovers in my PRS (before I switched to Ants), my Pal wanted a set in his 335 and still have them !

Sorry, Lew....I'm slightly confused by your post. I was asking about using a Jazz in the neck position and a '59 in the bridge position. Could you clarify?

Fabien's advice is right on the money, IMO. Lew

I meant that the Jazz neck would have a slightly clearer tone with more extended highs and a little less bass than the 59N. I like the 59N alot but tend to prefer the Jazz neck and I think it would make a nice set with the 59B as the bridge pickup.

Re: Humbuckers for a Semi-Hollowbody

a jazz neck with a 59b is a combo ive seen quite a few times. the jazz gives a nice clear tone with a tighter bottom that isnt as big as a 59n that matches well with the 59b. the 59s bigger bottom is nice in the bridge position where there is a brighter natural tone to get a fuller sound.

Re: Humbuckers for a Semi-Hollowbody

i have a pair of 59s in my 335 copy. i thought the neck 59 was a tad bassier than i wanted. all i did was change the volume pots to 1 meg pots. now i'm in heaven.
