Humbuckers for Ash Ibanez...

Okay, one more to throw at you folks...

I just got an Ibanez FR1620 in a trade, and want to change from the stock pups but this isn't your average Ibanez in that the body is ash. It's got the Wizard maple/walnut neck and rosewood fretboard, fixed bridge and 25.5" scale length, HH configuration. I play heavier rock/some metal but use clean tones as well. So what pups do you think would sound good in this beast (even if they aren't SD, just looking for opinions). Thanks!!!

Danny

Re: Humbuckers for Ash Ibanez...

Pickups: something with a bunch of mids. Ash is known for sounding somewhat scoopy in the mids, with the tone being more lows+highs than other woods. Duncan Distortion comes to mind as something which would complement the wood. And while I have no live listening experience with the Dimarzio Breed and Evolution, they may fit the bill as well.

Re: Humbuckers for Ash Ibanez...

Go with either the AHB-1 Blackouts set or the Dave Mustaine Livewires...and never look back! :headbang:

Re: Humbuckers for Ash Ibanez...

Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys! I prefer passives as well, forgot to mention that. Going to check out the DD and the Dimarzio SD so far. What would you think about a Dimarzio Super 3 in this?

Re: Humbuckers for Ash Ibanez...

The Super 3 is good, but a bit too compressed for my taste (it is super thick, though). My personal preference would be a PAtB-1n/PATB-1b. It'll be thick enough to fatten up the guitar, but it's still an articulate set for fast riffing.

Re: Humbuckers for Ash Ibanez...

Thanks for the recommendation! Is there a reason to go PA in a non trem guitar? Just curious, as i have no experience with those and this is a non trem guitar.

Re: Humbuckers for Ash Ibanez...

The set up is close to my Washburn USA MG 102 except mine has a Wilkerson Trem. I went through a number of pickups and finally settled on a 59 neck Custom 8 set up. For less aggression and a warmer more open tone try a Custom Custom and Alnico II Pro set up. In bolt on Strat scale Swamp Ash guitars with rosewood boards both set ups KILL.

THey thicken up a guitar nicely without completely covering up the guitar's inherent sound.
