Humbuckers in an SG?

Re: Humbuckers in an SG?

Justification: They are a Blast to play!
I needed another guitar like I needed a hole in my head, but I didnt have an SG. I tried a bunch of Epis, faded gibbies etc. Bought a G400 Epi in black, put a C 5 in the bridge and a 59 in the neck and it inspires me everytime I pick it up!! The C5 is perfect in it..

Re: Humbuckers in an SG?

I went with '59s in my SG looking for the same sounds. I think I got them. Wouldn't Clapton's and Angus' original SGs both have had lower output A5 mag pickups? Seems to me that the '59 fits the bill. The rest is amps and settings.

Re: Humbuckers in an SG?

I'd go PG bridge ( closest to my ears to a gib 57 ) and 59n. But if it was my SG i would do the 3 pickup model and put in phat cats :)

A triple Phat Cat guitar (LP or SG) would probably be a lot of fun. Anyone have one yet? Man, all the magnet combinations that are possible! You could really do some dialing in with your tones.

Re: Humbuckers in an SG?

The next SG I get will have nickel Custom 5/Pearly Gates N.

I used to have a 61 Reissue, but didn't have it long enough to hear Duncans in it. I just kept the Classic 57's in there, which I liked, but it's not really the AC/DC sound. They resembled Derek Trucks sound more.

Now that I think about it, the pickup I have that most closely resembles Angus and Iommi is the Brobucker. It's got to be normally potted though, if it's got a nickel cover.

Once again Joe is right IMHO. The Brobucker will get that tone. I would think that the '59 or the C5 would be pretty close if you don't want to pay custom shop prices. There is always the Custom/59 hybrid too. Just about any of the vintage style neck pickups would get you Clapton. The '59 would probably be closest, although I may try a PG in the neck when I buy my G400.

Re: Humbuckers in an SG?

OK, now that I got the info on pups....I am making the plunge tomorrow with a layaway at GC And at a good buy (the guy at GC wasn't aware that this was an LE and had it priced in the lower end Epi SG range)....a nice way to end the thread, don't ya think? Limited edition, grover tuners, beautiful Olympic white....sweet. Hmmmm....probably 59 neck and SH 14/C5 in bridge....in the near future.
(but after playing it today, I gotta say the stock pups ain't too shabby for an epi)

Re: Humbuckers in an SG?

Hey all,

I was thinking about dropping these into my old beater SG. The stock pups are beat to crap and I thought I'd have some fun with it. Anyone care to opine about these pups?? Is this SH-4 the same as an SH-4 JB? Thanks...
