Hybrids!

Thinking about more ideas for winding pups at User Day.

Anyone try the hybrids?

Custom/59
Custom/Jazz (I thought this might be a GREAT pup!)

Or maybe some PAf-like hybrids?

PG/Aph-1
59/Jazz

What do you think of the ones you've tried? I've begun to think a lot about these.

Re: Hybrids!

I'm really pumped about the idea of a C-5/'59 hybrid. I'm gonna try that ASAP. A A JB/'59 could be pretty interesting too.

Re: Hybrids!

I'd like a Pearly Gates/Screamin Demon hybrid. I matched their sound clips up together in a multi track recording software, and it sounds pretty good!

Re: Hybrids!

They're easy enough to make, but you need some patience....I currently use a PG/Custom Hybrid and it's a very good pickup...I need to switch the A2 out with an A5 though one of these days..

Re: Hybrids!

I've made a Blues/59 hybrid. I didn't care for it with an A5 magnet, but I loved it with an A2. In fact, I'll be ordering parts from Warmoth today to build a guitar around that pickup!

Re: Hybrids!

I have a few JB's, Customs, 59's and a Screamin Demon laying around if anybody wants me to make them a Hybrid of their choice!

I would not recommend using a 59N coil if you are making a BRIDGE POSITION pickup...

May I ask why not? What would be the result?

Anyone else think a Jazz/59 would be an AMAZING neck pickup?

BTW, how do you make these things anyway? Who knows?

Look back a few pages, BachToRock posted a tutorial. Maybe we can get Scott to move that post to the vault.

In general, I agree that bridge coils should be used for a bridge pickup. Using a high powered JB or Custom coil and a lower output '59 neck coil would create more of a coil mismatch.

One thing I've always wondered about these hybrids, are they more prone to hum than a traditional bucker? If one coil is wound significantly hotter than the other, wouldn't the unbalanced coils result in some hum that wouldn't be present in a typical humbucker? That Pearly Gates/Alnico 2 Pro neck hybrid sounds very intriguing.

You didn't read the post... I said that a NECK coil is not recommended for making a BRIDGE pickup...
A JAZZ/59 is an amazing neck pickup and I have them in most of my guitars... if you do a search on Hybrid you will see my post with instructions and also comments on the NECK Hybrids...

Yes... there will be a tiny bit of hum in the output because the coils are not electrically identical, therefore, they will not BUCK all of the hum!

Re: Hybrids!

hey noob, I like your idea about running two soundclips together...Could you do that with a Jazz/Custom and describe (or post in tips and clips) your findings?

I know the ceramic mag would make a difference, but to find out anyway..

If I can't make it to User Group Day, I may want one. I'll let you know. I have to get a new guitar first.

The timing isn't perfect, but you can get an idea. I assumed you mean Duncan Custom; I can do another one if that isn't right.

Re: Hybrids!

When you guys do these hybrids does the pickup look messy when you put it back together? I've done some magnet swapping and the black tape around the bobbin looks like crap now. Big sticky mess.
