No fuzz, distortion, overdrive, or "amp-in-a-box" pedal is really that original.
As an oversimplified general rule:
Distortions are opamp driven circuits with clipping diodes (or in some cases, if you're uhm, OCD, mosfets as diodes) on the output of the opamp, with or without a tone circuit.
Overdrives are like distortions, except the clippers are in the feedback loop of the opamp.
Fuzzes use a couple of transistors driven to clipping.
Amp-in-a-box pedals substitute fets for tubes in amp circuits.

Please go on. I know next to nothing about the Centaur and I am interested about it. However, I am not interested enough to put the work into digging through google.

The Centaur actually was kind of original in it's day. It has clipping diodes on the output of the opamp, which I generally call a distortion, but it is a very clear distortion. It also uses a dual pot for gain which mixes in some of the clean signal after the clipping diodes but before the tone controls. So, it is more sophisticated than a lot of OD/Dist pedals, but nothing earth shattering. Vasshu can probably contribute more since he is a pedal guru :wave:

The interesting thing is that the status got the way it did because it:
A. Sounds great
B. Was used by many high profile artists
C. Was in limited supply
As long as A. was true, it would have been cloned eventually. (see the Timmy) But without C. there would never had been this fervor over it.
Pretty interesting story.
Plus the internal charge pump to take it to 18V.
The interesting thing is that the status got the way it did because it:

As I can recall it was based on the old MXR Dist+ or a DOD250 added a dualpot for clean dirt mix(blender), and the 18v chargepump.
It does not share the same layout as a TS pedal, but they sound very close, and works best the same way(just more clarity).
Maxon OD-820 is closely related setupwise.
Nothing mystical about it really, just tweaked for what it does.
It is like kitchen appliances...everybody needs a blender

I usually buy originals out of principle. At times though, copies of the original will feature improvements like a smaller footprint, added tone controls, dc input, etc. If that's the case I'd gladly put my principles aside and go for something that I could tweak to fit my rig better.
