I am just a gear ho...

Re: I am just a gear ho...

I think the reason Scott F and The Chris both sold the Bad Cats is because Matchless and Bad Cat are a sort of Class A design that has a particular sound. It's a very tubby sound with a high end that can lose composure as the amp is turned up loud. Where most amps lose it in the bass, these amps lose it in the treble....get's blatty on the high notes.
It's a sound that not everyone likes. I have to admit, when I got my Matchless, after sending $2000 across the country without ever hearing it, I was nervous.
When I got it, I realized it's one of the best sounding clean amps, but the overdriven tone is an aquired taste. I didn't start to fully love the amp till I'd found it's best settings and best tube compliment. Now, I love it for what it does, but by no means would it be taken to a gig in place of the Bogner. And for the record, my second Bogner is just a passing amp that I bought low to sell high. My early original white chassis Ecstasy ain't goin nowhere!

Well I got my X-mas bonus yesterday and went right down and blew it on a Bad Cat Mini Cat. I've been wanting a tube bedroom amp for awhile. I was looked at a Victoria Champ. It was nice, but I kept looking at it and saying, it's not a Fender. I don't know why that mattered because I have plenty of less well know stuff. The guy said it had a re-coned original Fender speaker, as if that was special. I think I can get a Champ kit or even a real Fender Champ, someday. I also tried the new Dr. Z Mini Z. That was nice, but hella loud at 9:00 on the volume dial, it's only dial. The guy didn't want to go above 1/2 volume on the Mini Z. It was too loud for a bedroom amp. I tried an old supro, but it didn't do it for me. The bad cat mini had a nice bluesy sound and the master volume. I know it's a lot of money to blow on tiny amp, but I couldn't stop myself. Plus it fits on my cabinet, right next to my Univalve, which is not a bedroom amp.
