I am Keef Richards!

EXACTLY!!

I saw this argument on FB a couple of months ago and it ended when one guy said:

“If tone is all in the fingers, explain why Eddie’s tone changed so drastically when he went to the 5150 from the Plexi”

If tone is in the fingers it technically shouldn’t matter what amps/guitars he was playing. It should have all sounded the same.

And even in the DLR years, his tone changed quite a bit from album to album.
Listen to their cover of Pretty Woman. That tone is NOTHING like Ain’t talkin’ bout love.

Honestly, I think EVH just grew as a player over the years. His tone changed because he changed.

Then please explain why acoustic guitar players sound different.

Because fingers affect tone. The player isn't the sole cause of the tone like tone is in the fingers implies.

Yep

Keith Richards reportedly owns 3000 guitars, and he once jokingly said, "Give me five minutes and I'll make them all sound the same."

This is exactly me. I CAN make them sound different. But I am just one of those people that hones in on my sound whatever you give me.

If tone is in the fingers, and 5 minutes to make them all sound the same makes me Keef, then ...hey, where's the money??!?!?!

We have all heard the story of Ted Nugent and EVH swapping gear. Even with a Gibson Byrdland and a Fender Silverface amp, EVH sounded like EVH.

I’m not at all saying that the nuances of one’s playing aren’t made in the fingers.
But the gear makes a HUGE difference as well.

You can’t tell me that a 100w Plexi and Princeton would sound exactly the same in Eddie’s hands.

They wouldn't sound the same in a novice's hands. NOTHING is the total sum of tone. Not amps, speakers, string type or fingers. However, they all contribute to the final product.

I never said tone is in the fingers I just do not agree with the premise fingers do not affect tone.

If I implied that fingers do not in any way affect tone, I apologize. I absolutely feel that the players touch does affect what we hear.
BUT….the gear is very important as well.
It’s a cumulative thing going on. The end result is a combination of all of the aspects of the sound chain….including the players touch.

Tone is in the fingers is just a euphemism for tone in the player/his feel/technique/quirks/touch etc.

^^ As far as I'm concerned that's the bottom line. If you want to add what should be obvious anyway.. then yeah, only when comparing similar gear

He obviously won't sound the same playing a piano or saxaphone

Or an acoustic guitar, or without distortion, or with 15 gauge strings.. It's a bs statement. Fingers affect tone is the accurate statement, not tone is in the fingers. Or 'tone is in the fingers, only when comparing similar gear.'

Oops I deleted my original post by mistak, trying to quote something from it :8:...but yeh...the gist of what I said is up there anyway..

Here's why I think the euphemism is stupid. It doesn't say anything about the gear when what creates the music is the player and the gear. It isn't 1 or the other. It's both. So only saying tone is in the fingers implies that it is not in the gear, when that's false. Tone is in the fingers and the gear.

To the extent that I agreed with him ..sure he is :bigthumb:

Pretty sure if you or I (or Clint) plugged into EVH's actual rig we'd all sound NOTHING like him...
