I am so NOT an impulse response guy! (CLA Bass FTW)

Struggled for a long time last night trying to get a useable tone for bass guitar using my SansAmp bass track and 2 purchased bass cabs for Wall Of Sound III, a 4x10 and a 1x15.

In the end I ditched the plan to mult the bass and took my single bass track and tried the Waves CLA Bass plugin I purchased because it was on sale and thought it might come in handy.

This plugin is AMAZING! It stacks really well with the SansAmp, is easy to dial in and much less fiddly than faffing round with impulse responses.

The end result w IRs is simply not worth the effort to my ears. It just sounds .. . not right.

So, props to all you guys that are able to get great tones with IRs, it is obviously a skill I do not have yet!

I am planning on using an IR blend with mic'd guitar tracks, as well, so I will have to see how that pans out ...

I saw this as Impulse PURCHASE in the title. I thought you bought a new bass and put the thread in the wrong room. Disappointed

wow congrats! I would like to see a pic of the 4x10 and a 1x15.

I really dig impulses for bass because you can "reamp" and record one bassline, and then have one track with all the low end under 100hz and then another track with all the high end bassguitar frequencies.

for guitars, ya I wish I could record my amp in a nice big room but that ain't happening and neither is a kemper in the next 5 years.

I bought the impulse responses for Wall Of Sound III (the plugin).

It depends on the song and the band but for most metal, I like to multitrack one or more 10" speakers and a 15" (sometimes biamped with two different sounds punchy/super bassy) and usually a DI as well which may or may not get used but blended in with the real amps and an impulse response with a bit of distortion can get some cool sounds. Using amp distortion on the bass can make it wash in with the guitars sometimes so using sims on that DI amongst tracks of real guitar cabinets helps separate the grind better.
