I asked a dumb question today..

I called Bill at Two Rock to ask him a really dumb question.

Normally when I bias an amp, I use the little Weber Bias Rite gizmo that hooks straight up to my multimeter. Normal reading for 6L6 tubes are in the 30-35 range.

On the TR Custom Reverb, they have a quick test point. put the ground lead to a good ground and then put the little red lead up into this small recepticle.

Last night in my codeine fog, (great time to rebias an amp, huh?) I find that the JJ tubes in there are running at 58 mv. I'm thinking, **** is that HOT! Those tubes are going last a month at the most.

So as I'm talking to Bill at TR, it hits me that you have to double the readings I used to get with my BiasRite. So in the TR, each tube is running at 29mv. DUH! :smack:

I do one tube at a time, so the reading is always accurate. I guess his bias points sum up the two tubes. By the way, did you review that amp? If so, I missed it.

o man that is the dumbest question i have ever heard!! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: by the way, that was sarcasm. most of what you were talking about in that post went right over my head. you should just leave the "stupid questions" to us clueless folks. man sometimes your guys's infinite knowledge about guitar gear blows my mind. keep up the good work! without ya, people like me would learn nothing here.

No big deal Scott....You know fully well about what's going on,plus you build your own amps...Just a momentary lapse of reason,but not a dumb question...

For sure if the word "repair" applies, don't drink and drive.

The beauty behind having a " test " point accessible without removing the chassis is that you can adjust the bias without having to expose yourself to deadly voltages.

Scott I never used the BiasRite, is that basically the same as the GT Bias Probe? (Now, *this* is a dumb question, because they must work the same, but thought I'd as anyway). Thanks.

Yep, they go inline between the tube and the tube socket, then hook up to a multimeter.

but I only measure one at a time. Two Rock measures both together and then adds the results. With the reverb tank in that head, there isn't really any room for the Biasrite, unless you buy a biasrite that has that angle to it.

Wrote and doubled some great guitar solos the other night under the codeine influence. Don't think I've ever been able to focus that well on the simple things...

Try coughing in your pickups with lots of gain and delay set to infinite regeneration. Great background to solo "Amazing Grace" over. (I'm still on the codeine if ya can't tell).
