I can feel a good one coming on....

High Voltologist
Found an old Ibby Artist I couldn't figure out what model it was. I was thinking maybe it was someone's project put together of some odd mix of parts. A little research shows it's a '79 AR-50 in excellent shape, not a ton of them out there apparently. Coolness.....

Figure as long as it is still around tomorrow it's mine.

Wish me luck. I could use a good score, my interest in guitar has been minimal at best lately, wouldn't mind kicking things back up a notch.

Very cool... I understand that the Artist series is supposed to be a great guitar. Good luck... and be sure to post pics! [emoji109]

I wish I could find an old artist around. I've always wanted one, they look awesome and apparently sound great.

Let us know how it turns out!

Re: I can feel a good one coming on....

The guitar is pretty clean especially considering it's a '79, very little fretwear on what look to be the original jumbo frets.

Killer fret board, killer. I thought it was ebony but looking at it in the daylight with fresh eyes I am thinking it is very dark rosewood, maybe Brazilian!?! There are a few minor dings and some scratches but most of the scratches will buff out pretty easily. Needs a little setup and maybe a touch of relief but it's strung with 9's so when I put the 10's on later I'll have a better idea. Sounds great, very Billy Gibbons/Pearly vibe to it. The neck is nice and round and chunky, feels like an older LP which is great. The last Artist I had was great but had a very thin neck with an oddly pronounced volute that made it kind of uncomfortable to play down low. It also had SD 59's in it which made it a bit fatter sounding than the Super 70's in this one.

This model never made the catalogs in '79 it was a dealer special apparently to give them a less expensive option than all the flame and burst style tops, kind of like an Ibanez version of what Gibson did with the Studio. When the AR-50 made the catalogs a year later they all had neck and body binding from what I can find. Not that it's so rarified or anything but it's kind of neat, I like having a bit of an oddball. Sam Ash had it marked as an ST-55 which is a bit of an offset SG style guitar since they couldn't figure what it was, they could have easily asked double what I paid for it if they knew what it was. Has the original case too, it's coming unglued but I think I can salvage it. All in all a really nice score. I love older Ibanez guitars so this was a pretty sweet 50th bday present to myself, very happy.

I'll take some nicer pics when I do the setup.

Awesome! I love oddballs too. This is indeed a sweet score friend. Rock it!

Re: I can feel a good one coming on....

Used it for rehearsal last night and it is a beast of a guitar, damn!

The Super 70 neck pup is outfreakingstanding!

I had these in my old Iceman when I was a kid but swapped them out for Bill Lawrence L-500's because I wanted to be
Joe Perry. Silly me

Thats got me a' thinkin! I got an old super 70. In the neck, is it at all boomy , too dark/ bloated like some Paf's?..could be just what the doctor ordered for my Tele neck pickup..hmm...

Re: I can feel a good one coming on....

I didn't think is was dark no, more like a PG neck maybe but clearer and more open sounding. I liked the string to string definition a lot.

Re: I can feel a good one coming on....

You'll find people knocking those type of bridges, but I like em. My 1973 Les Paul Signature Semi Hollw has that kind of bridge, and it gets good action off bridge, especially for muting.
Fortunately for me Kluson makes a new Steel bridge for NON METRIC Gibsons to replace the aluminum, but for me, I just prefer steel.

AND i think that guitar you bought is a real jem.
Looks a lot like my 85 Les Paul Double Cut, which a master Luthier did the frets on to perfection-plays like buttah, but unfrtunately someone robbed the original Tim Shaws before I got it.I got another bridge 'Shaw' from 'Hamerplyr' in Germany though.
