As long as I can sell it for more money.

I just had a discussion with the owner of the cartoon company I work for.
He was extremely impressed with the fact that I scour the earth for rock
bottom prices on gear, then turn them around for a higher profit margin
than any stock or traditional investment....without any chance of loss.

So, I now have a financial backer to fund any gear purchase I make.
The only catch? I can't fall in love with anything and keep it, and I can't make a mistake and buy something that can't be sold at a substantial profit.
We split the profit 50/50, minus business expenses like Ebay charges, shipping cost, etc.

So, look out used market, here comes the Gearjoneser with a $100,000
budget for rare, vintage, cool, limited ed., or celebrity owned pieces. :bling:

Good luck bro. Sounds like a great business proposition. Nice to have to $100 k bank roll to back you. Lots of Ebayer's are making a living doing this kind of thing. The real trick, as you said, is not falling in love with any gear. For a guy named gearjonser, that's gonna be a tough one. There must be some kind of prescription drug you can take to cure your jones.

Come to think of it, if you were recording and needed a specific guitar or piece of gear but didn't really want to purchase it, this would be a great opportunity to get it, make the record and a profit.

I do the same thing, I have NEVER lost money on any gear I resell, even when I've bought a guitar used, used it for 2 years, then decided to sell it, I usually make a $300 profit. Only difference is you have money to back you now. All I have is the money that I profit to put back in. lol oh well

might be a good investment! :wink: Might as well use a 63 strat and
59 'real' Paul! LOL Nah, I doubt it'll be that extravagant, but it's nice to work with a real budget for once!

What a cool scheme. I can honestly say I'm a little bit jealous.

Just be sure to make wise investments. If something nose-dives in value, you might be swimming in loss. I've lost money myself on instruments I thought were too cool to pass up.

How does one know what will and what won't make a profit?

At this point, I kinda know the gear market pretty well, as well as the details
that determine if a piece will continue to rise in value, even in a bad market.
Stock brokers don't even have the ability to judge a market the way musicians can with gear.

I saw a graph in a magazine once that showed the rare, vintage music market alongside the Dow Jones, Futures, Oil n Gas, commodities etc.
The music resale market had a line that went steadily upwards, while all the other markets fluctuated.

One reason the guitar market has been so good in recent years is because
of all the former stock holders started selling off their worthless stock in the late 90's and replacing it with collectible music gear....One Microsoft founder comes to mind. Do you know of any stock that equals Buddy Holly's 54 strat?
It was $150 in 54, and somewhere around $350,000 in 2000.

I'm not saying I think I can be like Norman, Gruhn, or some of these auction houses, but who knows? The only difference between them and the average
"buy low sell high guy" is the amount of money they have to spend.
If what you have is desireable enough, there's always a buyer.
Even easier if you live in Los Angeles, where it's a buyer's market, and move the stuff to a seller's market, where deals on super rare items only come along once. I've seen things sell on Ebay that I could have bought for half as much, most likely off a poor musician who moved here, realized there's no chance of making it, then he sells his stuff to get back home. That's a common scenario here.
