I can't understand not floating a strat bridge

Re: I can't understand not floating a strat bridge

i have one guitar with a v-trem.. it is tightened to the body and put has 5 springs on it. Also has a brass block as well

I also have a few floyd guitars which is sorta unusual as I rarely use the trem. i just like way they feel. I have the tremelos set to float as level as possible and with 4 springs.I keep these guitars at a specific tuning. one in E, one in Eb, and another in C

we all set up guitars differently..

Re: I can't understand not floating a strat bridge

I really like the feel of a floating Floyd (don't care for the locking nut.) Most of my Strats are set just barely floating and if I were to go with another Semi-Hollow strat I would not use a floating tremolol. I use to use the bar a lot but now they hardly ever even leave the case.

I think its a simple personal preference, no right or wrong way between floating or non-floating.

Filed under 'a word appropriated to another meaning'. Fight it only if you like lost causes.

+1 on no right or wrong.

Floyd intended it to float and then Eddie turned that on its head. But Eddie also helped with the idea to allow a full step of tuning range in the fine tuners, so he's got that going for him.

Re: I can't understand not floating a strat bridge

Wow, I remember when that thread was originally posted, d@mn I'm feeling old when that happens, not to mention realizing how I miss some older members like Dangly and Lu_B. I was also amazed I never posted here before since way back then I only had my MiM Strat and a Stratish Cort.

Truth is I prefer even my floating trems (sorry Vasshu za Sutanpīdo, my vibrato units) to be resting on the top, I don't really use any pull-ups in my playing and I think they usually feel better when they're on the body. Then again, that's not a hard rule, it's more of a per-guitar decision, although the on-the-top ones are 3-to-2 over the floating ones.

Pedal style bends go out of tune if your bridge floats.
It really comes down to the kind of licks you play.

ps. see my avatar pic for a quick and dirty way of getting some fake trem bar sounds.

Re: I can't understand not floating a strat bridge

The best trem I have ever used was the TransTrem, which allowed strings to bend at a different rate. It stayed there when not being used, but when using it, all of the strings would move the same distance pitch-wise at the same time. That was really cool.

Re: I can't understand not floating a strat bridge

I use the Super V blade runner trem. it pivots off metal attached to bolted down screws. it stays in tune much better and sustains much better then a standard strat bridge. It has worked well for me but check it out on YouTube for the rundown on it. with a tremol-no?....system attached keeping your strat tuned should be less of a problem. each to his own, this works great for me.
