Re: I Did Something I Said I Wouldn't Do.

The other is that it really hands over the volume control to the modeler. With something like the XT or other small modeler that's not a problem as it sits right on the unit which gets mounted in. With the XT Live the volume is on the pedal itself, and therefore not as convenient. It's hard to fault Atomic for this but it is something that can come up. One thing I may do to fix this is to make a small volume box that runs from the XT Live to the amp and sits on top of the amp and just keep the XT Live cranked up and use the box on the amp to add more as I need it. A minor quibble though.

Nah, what you need is an Ernie Ball or some other overbuilt volume pedal, run it out from the Pod to your playing position & back to the Atomic. That'd take care of it real quick!

Re: I Did Something I Said I Wouldn't Do.

I got home from a rehearsal on Friday night and was a little bummed out. The idea of "going digital" with a PodXT Live through the PA or into a Crate PowerBlock and Marshall 2 x 12 cab...it just seemed like way more work than I wanted to put in and WAY more gear than I really wanted to be carrying.

I don't really want to abandon digital, but I do want something I KNOW is going to sound good but will be relatively portable.

I checked a local place online and tomorrow I'm picking up an Atomic 1 x 12 18 watt amp.

Maybe it's just me having been spoiled by showing up with a Blues Junior and a boost pedal, but I'm just too old for these huge-ass rigs.

I'm hoping it works out. If the Atomic sounds good I can totally see my next project being incorporating a Variax. Showing up with a gig bag and an amp? That's the dream!

Good luck! May the analog be with you! :D

Re: I Did Something I Said I Wouldn't Do.

Not surprisingly, both flaws you pointed out are no longer issues in the latest Atomic amps.

It's good to see that they're listening to their users.

Actually, no.

A pedal is likely to move when I put my foot on it.

With a small box on top of the amp I'm much more likely to be more effective in making changes accurately.

You could get one of those pads that prevent pedals from moving, or even tape it to the floor. Tried that? Just asking....

*holds one hand out*

Fifty bucks for a pedal...some kludgy rigging...more floor space taken up on small stages...

*holds other hand out*

...stupid twenty dollar box that sits on top of the amp out of the way....

*thinks*

Yeah....I think I'm going to have to nix the pedal idea.

Re: I Did Something I Said I Wouldn't Do.

I've been pondering repurposing my Behringer UB802 mini mixer into my live rig in front of the Roland amp. The damn thing's useless as a studio mixer and not worth the trouble of selling, so I may as well put it to good use.

The reason would be so I could have a bit more control over the EQ, and also have the possibility of plugging an acoustic into one of the channels, bypassing the PodXT. There's also the benefit of being able to run a mix direct to the PA, thus avoiding the need to throw a mic in front of the amp.

A similar idea may work for you too. In addition to a master volume, it's good to have a bit of master EQ control in live situations. When I play out with my modeller, I find that the apparent EQ varies quite a lot depending on the room and the position of my amp. You may notice the same thing when you start gigging with the Atomic.

Re: I Did Something I Said I Wouldn't Do.

Glad it worked out for ya skarey. No doubt the Atomic is the best solution for the Line 6 stuff. Though my XTL also sounded great into the front end of my Chubster.

The real problem I had with it was that I could never get rid of that "blanket" effect, unless I REALLY pushed the volume..which for my needs (at home) was way too loud. The Valvetronix I find is the better mousetrap for various volume levels and requires much less tweaking to get it sound as good on "7" as it does on "2" (e.g)

...but no doubt once ya get a patch dialed in *right* with the Atomic and XTL, it sounds REALLY good.

And the handle position sucks :chairfall The new models are much better in that regard.

Live's a different ballgame entirely. That I do realize. Rather than the volume box it could very well be some EQ pedal or something in there. It's totally going to be a situation where I need to hear the problems before I start going after them though.

But for rehearsal volumes the thing handles the job beautifully.

The Atomic is a weird amp in that regard; I did find the sound was more consistent than i expected it to be throughout. Once I did get past a certain point the push definetley made it act like a tube amp and everything broke up. That may be a function of just the tubes thought and going with something a little cooler overall for more headroom.

The weird thing about the handle position is that toting it around that way felt WAY more natural to me! Kind of counter-intuitive, sure....but I found getting it in and out of the car alot easier with the handle where it is.

But I feel good knowing the only thing I'm second-guessing myself on with it is whether or not I should have gone with a new one versus the used one.

Eh...I'm a cheap bastard...I would have gone with the used no matter what!
