Re: I dont understand full stacks

Resurrection Part II!!

All I know is my Tremoverb and Carvin V3 4x12 with Emi speakers has been my favorite, most fun rig I've ever played in my life. It's loud when I need it to be, but it sounds amazing and its controllable.

I'm in a heavy rock band. I started the project with a 2x12 and it just didn't really cut it. I paired up two 2x12s and got a little closer to what I needed. A single 4x12 did the trick. It's just a tool for the sound I need. I have a good-sounding 2x12, but I rarely use it just because I need the chunk the 4x12 gets me for my music. Even in my old alt-rock band I went from a 4x to a 2x and it just wasnt the same somehow. I never got told to turn down with the 4x because I know how to control it.

I'll keep the 2x12 in case I need it though. In case I'm sitting in on a gig that doesn't require heavy tones.

What happened to the Bogner?!

Re: I dont understand full stacks

You have toi get the Top Cabinet at the height its at . Trust me on thatr. A half stack sound good but a full stack sounds phenomenal.
Quit being a wuss and get a hundred watt amp with a full stack. Unless you stand roight in front you ears wont know the difference between that and those putird beaming, one speaker, low watt directional amps.
Rule- 30 watts single speaker .50 watts half stack, 100 watts full stack.
8 speakers soaks up the tone and volume and its just fantastic and you don't have any idea..its nowheres near too loud.Sure its loud, but are you a Rocker or a C*cker??

What happened to the Bogner?!

I sold it.

Long story short, the Bogner was an amazing amp, but not the ideal fit for the sound I was going for. I was never able to get the mids on the Bogner to sit right where I wanted them to. I made little use if the myriad of switches and options the amp had to offer. I rarely used the green channel, sticking to the orange and red mostly. I needed an amp slightly more voiced for metal. Lastly, I didn;t like having $2500 tied up in one amp - I kept fighting with myself over it. I did some homework and research and sold it and got two different amps. One of them, the Tremoverb, I like a lot. The other one (a 1979 JMP) is up for sale right now, as I've discovered that I like more modern-sounding amps.

Re: I dont understand full stacks

Well, among all these fantastic discussions I'd just like to add:

I want a full stack just to be able to say, "I have a full stack."

Of course I need to move out of this apartment and into some house way in the country side in order to be able to crank it.

Re: I dont understand full stacks

I think all the nay-sayers in favor of micing combos should do themselves a favor and try to see a Jucifer or High On Fire or SunnO))) show.

i can totally see the benefit of having more than 1 speaker cabinet, for recording and rehearsal purposes; having 17 speakers in the same box, facing the same direction seems excessive though; especially when your drummer has to set up his kit outside to accomodate it

they do look awesome dont they?.....but i run 2 seperate half stacks,in stereo....off my effects unit...one left and one right...the peavey amp is from 83 i think..it is a peavey rock master head, with 6L6 tubes.....the other amp is gone..it was a s.s. ibanez...it's replacement..a peavey triple x head is getting warranty work done...those details are in the triple x thread...so when i get that back ,i will have a monster rig....and i love it.

. . . come on, do you really need a drummer ?

Re: I dont understand full stacks

I count three microphones.

Correct sir!

Brian uses the AC30s in banks of 3 in a wet/dry/wet setup from Left to Right.

The 3 rows of amps are there as backups incase anything blows, they just move the mics backwards and onto the next row of amps :D

They don't technically count as 'stacks' anywhere though right? They're combos for starters! :friday:

Re: I dont understand full stacks

I saw Coliseum in a living room, both guitarists played (I think) Sunn Coliseum 300 heads (dudes like to name their bands after Sunn amps) with full stacks and the bassist played with an 8x10 and something else, maybe a 2x15. Yes, in a living room. Yes, I could still hear the drummer. Yes, my ears rang for 3 days.

I'm coming from a different world, I couldn't even practice with less than 60w, a Mig60 on 10 is just adequate. My Mark III stays between 5-7 on the master.

Or get an Vox Ac4tv the head and cab version. Add a second cab and you would technically have a full stack that wouldn't have the neighbors knocking at the door with pitch forks and torches.

Isn't running a 4 watt head into a full stack kinda like buying a Bugatti Veyron and then swapping the engine out for a 50cc two-stroke moped engine?

Nah, try it and you'll see. I run my 5 watter through two 4x12's. Thick and huge sounding with a wide spread. Much better than with one or two 1x12's.
