hey everyone, this is not really a question, its a comment......i dont understand how all these micky mouse bands out there are soo seccessful, bands like simple plan and green day..(dont get me wrong, there good), but i've heard alot of people on this forum and heard thier stuff, you guys are incredibly good, and it just makes me upset that all these mtv bands are doing soo good with there crappy guitaring that is all easy chords, No great solo"s, no awsome riffs, nothing that requires skill, and shredders like most people here dont get that kind of recognition.......you guys are awsome......keep rocking.

The reason simple music makes it big is because it's, well.... simple.
You can hum it while you're driving, you don't have to think about it, and it's not intimidating to the vast majority of listeners.
Technical guitar music just doesn't do any of these things. it's interresting to guitar players and some other people, but you usually won't react to it the same way as to a pop song.
For example, I went to two concerts about a while ago. One was Al DiMeola and one was Collective Soul. I was blown away by DiMeola's playing, tone, phrasing, and technique. The problem is, that after about an hour of hearing him play, it seemed like he was just playing the same thing over and over again. I lost interest in him.
Collective Soul, while not being revolutionary, overly technical, or even playing anything that I can't play myself, kept me entertained for the full 2 1/2 hour show.
Think about it, when was the last time you hummed a Vai song inthe shower? :burnout:

Yeah, if you want mass appeal keep it simple. Most "great/popular" songs seem to be about 3 good chords. I was reading something by Roy Buchannan, a very accomplished player, and he said he'd seen guitar off's won by one note. Simple appeals to something like 90% of the people, if you want to be a shredder, you just accept that your audience may be smaller, but your fans will probably be hardcore. Also, keep in mind that the companies that put up the kind of money it takes to promote these bands want a sure thing.For every Greenday, there's countless bands that didn't make it trying to play simpler styles. Once they find a band that can make money, they'll keep milking them until they're not making money. If I was risking my money on promotion, I'd look for something with a simple catchy goove, too.

Simply put, Dream Theater will never sell more albums than The Beatles. That should not surprise anybody. It takes more than chops to create music that resonates.
Have you ever read James Joyce? His writing is brilliant from a technical standpoint--in Ulysses, each of the 24 chapters was written in a different style. Brilliant as it may be, it's a PITA to read.
Stuff that's technically impressive doesn't necessarily appeal to folks who aren't intimately familiar with the craft, be it writing, music, or whatever.

Guitar virtuoso skill has nothing to do with playing good music, dont get me wrong i do own more than a couple of satch albums, and also get a kick out of vai, but neither of them can write a song as good as greenday, and im not even much of a green day fan.
This is a reason why i like music so much, anyone can do it.

I agree. I have felt like there has been a huge lack of intelligent, main-stream rock, forever. There are a few exceptions, IMO, but for the most part I feel it's all the same crap rehashed. When is the last time you heard a cool song and you could dig the whole cd? Those guys in the late 60s, 70s, and early 80s, they had it going on. Maybe I'm stuck in a time trap, I dunno. But I can only think of a handful of rock bands that have consistently captured my interest in the past decade or so.

i agree. people just would rather listen to green day than steve zai when driving. greenday is a good band. but simpleplan? when u find people listening to simpleplan you smash the cd(or radio) and u hand them megadeths rust in peace. nuff saidxerxes said:

the key is in bands that find a balance, the ones that write great songs, but have equally as great musicianship, and have experimented a bit..........which is where most of my attention goes to........and 75% is from the 50s,60s,70s for me......which is where i find most of those bands that have the balance

I had it explained to me many years ago when I was a total shred kid (think ferarri engine with no steering wheel):
People get home from work, and don't necessarily want to listen to someone working really hard.
Shawn Lane said something very interesting about the whole shredder thing: that certain people have nervous systems that work well with that style of music. To expand, my experience tells me that most people's nervous systems want something a little less uptight.

what it comes down to is music plays a larger role in our lives than those of the people that listen to the pop stuff. therefore, we spend more time discovering really good music as it means more to us than it does to other people. i finallyunderstand how some people are obsessed with cars and others just see them as a way of getting from a to b. thats the focal point of these peoples lives, not just something to hold them over or get from a to b. therefore, people wanna hear something thats catchy and easy to like as it doesnt really change their lives; and rightly so, since those people have a life outside of music (i dont get how but they do).
